I have accumulated a pile of copper wire from motors, transformers and television yokes.

What is the best way to remove the varnish coating on the wiring ?
I have thought of burning it off, but worry about the toxic smoke.
I have also considered paint remover/stripper.

I understand the scrap metal dealers pay more for bare metal that can be thrown directly into the smelters.

I was just going to leave them together, and sell as #2 copper (TV Yokes), and as for electric motors, i was just going to threw the whole things into a bucket and sell them as "electric motors". But i too am interested in hearing a way i could turn all this into #1 copper.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

The whole idea with scrapping junk is to be efficient. If, with little effort you can separate the "good" metal, or upgrade it by removing something else, than do it.

Otherwise, you spend hours for pennies. The effort and time you spend will not equal the spread between #1 and #2

You might want to scratch the wire to make sure that it ISN'T aluminum wire. I've found a few motors that were aluminum wire, and I've heard that TV yokes can be as well.

Country_bumbkin,

Thanks for the advice.
It does seem like alot of effort for a small additional gain.
I will keep my copper wire with the varnish on.

I think difference between #2 wire and electric motor scrap wire makes removing wire from motors worth it. I can get the copper wire out of a electric motor within a few minutes. Once the coils are exposed, I use a dremel tool to cut the entire loop of wire and pull them out in one shot.
