I started sorting halves and saw on some site to save "P" mint-marks, So after a $500 box I got a ton of the P's. I looked to the PCGS price guide and find these as well as several of the D mint marks in same time frame are listed at like $11-20 (1971-2003).

Here is what I found:

Half Dollars

PCGS Price Guide
Coin / Minkmark/Qty./List MS-65/total
1983 (P) 2 $27.00 $54.00
1985 (P) 1 $25.00 $25.00
1986 (P) 3 $27.00 $81.00
1989 (P) 1 $20.00 $20.00
1990 (P) 2 $20.00 $40.00
1991 (P) 2 $11.00 $22.00
1992 (P) 4 $11.00 $44.00
1995 (P) 1 $11.00 $11.00
1998 (P) 8 $11.00 $88.00
1999 (P) 5 $11.00 $44.00
1997 (P) 17 $11.00 $187.00
2000 (P) 3 $11.00 $33.00
2001 (P) 1 $11.00 $11.00

50 $25.00 $660.00

Now this can't be right, I checked e-bay and you can find SOME of these for $2 of less. I understand some are likely far less than MS-65 grade but I wonder about the true value of these and how PCGS can make report these high values. I'm new to coins, though in comic book/ baseball cards I remember I might get 1/4 of the list price of any rare cards/comics when selling to a dealer. Even at that this price may not be a bad find. Any advice or comments?

I don't think so. I don't think you really get those prices although you might get close, and you'll lose out on any that don't make the grade. I use NGC for grading, costs $12 per coin + shipping and insurance both ways. If you were to ebay them and get good prices, your profit margin would probably not be worth it even if all 5 turned out ms-65. If only one turned out lower, your profits would evaporate.

Thanks a lot though for the info...

was thinking maybe sell the whole lot to a dealer or e-bay it, I'm sure I'll learn a lot at a few coin shops. Guessing eBay will be better...

Dynadin. Those prices are for MS65. There is little to no chance you found that many MS65's in a single $500 box. That would be amazingly lucky.

Also grading from PCGS costs $14 (for modern) + shipping both ways. So about $18 per coin.

And thridly the PCGS price for "common" coins is about +25% to +50% over stated.
