Currently, I am handsorting $125 to $150 of pennies a week.

To be honest, it keeps me quite busy. I haven't ventured into the nickel realm yet.

For those of you who handsort coins, do many of you do both nickels and pennies? Do you do more pennies and less nickels or vice versa?

Do any of you see advantages to doing both?

I am on the fence on whether I want to start sorting nickels and just wanted some insight.

I sort nickels. A lot of nickels, I probably did as many as I have pennies.

There are WN's and pre-82 Canadians to be found. Along with Buffalo, Liberty and Shield nickels.

I have also found several proofs. Nickels also yield a high quantity of tokens and foreign coins if your into that.

Do you handsort? How much of each do you do per week?

Yes, I hand sort. As far as quantity it varies a lot on my mood, motivation and financial situation. This week I did $800...

My wife and I handsort pennies. We've been doing that for about a year. Just recently we started picking up just a few rolls of nickles from time to time. For now, we are keeping all nickles (in case the price of nickle goes up and the melt ban is removed) but separate any nickle dated 1963 or earlier.

We have found one Canadian nickle that is beyond the pure nickle date, but everything else have been Jeff's, but no WN or 'key' dates. We only find on average 1 - 2 pre 1964 nickles per roll ... but often 'nothing' earlier than 1964.

Haven't seen and Buff's or earlier as yet.

I think its 'possible' that the Jeff's may become increasingly popular whether as a 'numismatic' item or as a 'metal content' item - seems to me like they could be, in coming years, a 'sleeper' series.

I handsort the nickels while the Ryedales are sorting the pennies. I take whatever CWR nickels my banks want to unload on me. They like that I am willing to take them, and it helps make you more popular at the bank if you are willing to take several demonimations of CWR rather than just pennies and halves. I have found several WN's, and a few hides.. but no Liberty or shield nickels yet.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Before school I sorted about $300 a week. Whenever I went to the bank I would pick up a box of nickels and 1-2 boxes of pennies. I found an average of 1 war nickel or buffalo in every box. I only saved 1960 and earlier because I found that saving 1961-1964 took up a lot more capital. I found almost a full roll of Canadian nickel nickels, 1 proof coin, and one that was off center.

I do about $300-$400 nickels per week.
I've collected a decent hoard of war nickels,39 buffaloes this year, several proofs.
I save all pre-war and all S mints before 1960.

Question: If you are sorting into "goods" and "bads" why not take the "bads" back to the bank? You can easily replace them with "unsorted" which would have a higher "expected value" than the "bads".

I would think the 2 "nickel" philosophies would be "keep all never look at them" or "sort and then return the zero numismatic value ones".

I used to sort $200 a week, but got burned out. I'll start again soon. I saved only the ones dated '58 and before.

I agree with Barrytrot. If you sort the nickels, then swap the bad ones for an equivalent amount of fresh unsearched nickels.

If you are just buying and stacking.. then try to get nice shiny BU boxes. That way you have a numismatic play as well.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
