On my walk home from school I pass several banks.
I have decided to pick-up about $50 a day-- sort through them-- And dump them on my way to school in the morning.
I will end up sorting through about $8000 by the end of the year. I know it is small scale but I dont have a job yet.
So my only question is...
What coin type am I most likely to find silver in?

Go for the halves. Sometimes the silver runs dry with halves, but with some perserverance it will pay off. |

Yes, halves are your best bet. But watch out. If I were you, I'd keep your sorting to yourself at school. Don't let a lot of kids see you walk in and out of the banks. Especially holding coins. They might get interested, and then nosey, and then greedy, and then... |

Depends on where you live. In my area your best bet would not be halves.
Unless your bank always has halves on hand you will have to order them, a box at a time. $50 in halves is 5 rolls. In dimes it is ten rolls, nickels it is 50 rolls. More rolls equals more coins to sort and better odds of finding Ag.
At $50 a day, it will take 10 days to sort a box of halves. 5 days to sort a box of dimes, 2 days to sort a box of nickels.
Dimes average at a minimum 1 Ag a box. Nickels also about 1 WN a box (with the added bonus of an occasional Ni Canadian). Halves are hit or miss.
At $50/day, in one week you could potentially find 1 Ag dime, or 2 WN's. With the ˝ a box of halves you could find a mother load or get literally dozens of skunks in a row.
Something to think about...

Here's the RealCent silver coin find frequency for 2009 to date:
War Nickels - 1 every 2170 coins searched Silver Dimes - 1 every 1630 coins searched Silver Quarters - 1 every 1825 coins searched Silver Halves (40%+90%) - 1 every 148 coins searched Silver Halves (40%) - 1 every 186 coins searched Silver Halves (90%) - 1 every 741 coins searched
Bluegill is right about the halves. Most of the time they are unobtainable and have to be ordered in $500 boxes. Dimes seem to be pretty consistent and are easy to get at any bank in $50 quantities; nickels the same. Quarters really aren't worth the trouble since most finds were lucky accumulations that were found. Use your young eyes to spy on the teller trays and tactfully ask for any silvers that you see.
So, I would recommend asking for CWRs and loose halves at a bank. If you've still got CASH left, get dimes or nickels with it. Be sure to eyeball the teller trays. After a while, you will discover what combinations of coins will work for you in your hometown. |

That's a nation wide average. I can tell right here and now those numbers do not apply to the Detroit metro area. Be careful with averages.

Good Luck with the searches. Starting small time is not so bad. If you were really motivated you could turn your profits over and use that money to search a little more.
Also if you were to say do some part-time work, maybe cut lawns or rake leaves or whatever. That money would also help you get started on a little higher scale. $50 a day is great place to start. But if you were to start with $500 dollars a week, get yourself started right! Search a box a week. A good week you could find easily over $20 worth of silver coins that would sell for over $100. This is always nice when you start searching an area not getting hit by half dollar leechers. And it never hurts to start.
Again GOod lUck!

I would trade off once awhile and do halves and if you can get them then go to dimes or nickels. Go through whatever you can get. |

I haven't had any problems obtaining single rolls of halves or anything else in my area.
I guess this week I'll pick up halves, then quarters, then dimes, and finally nickles. I will do this a couple of months, make a spread sheet to help me find which I am finding the most of.

Thanks for the heads up corsair.
I pass by five banks on the way home and (un?)fortunately I go right down main street.
I will put them in my backpack before I leave the bank. |

You may have an advantage at the banks being a young person. They aren't always nice to us old codgers when we go in there looking for rolls. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

First roll of dimes...
IT IS...IT IS... IT...isn't silver
Nope no silver today. Just a "silver-edged" '71 canadian.
Guess I should have prepared myself for that one.

That Canadian dime will be worth over 12 cents soon and it's pure Ni.
Good - start small - and build your war chest. Just remember you will need to have some cash to replenish your war chest for the silver coins you find and keep. You'll do ok with 5 banks to deal with. Go account shopping and get all the goodies. |

Wow. I just re-read Country's silver coin find frequency. I don't even wanna do the math for a % - that is really depressing!
I'll stick with my copper cents - but even that gets low sometimes. I just got a $50 bag & weighed it. My lowest weight yet! 29.2 lbs - projected to be only ~ 24% copper!
For my silver I'll stick w-buying 90% halves @ or near the Coinflation rates from a local dealer. Good luck to you silver hunters! I can't take that much rejection! Plus, my Credit Union says to buy halves I must buy $1,000 worth! Forget that! |

Actually i'd say go for the $1000 bags if they ever fill up. But that's just my opinion. |

3000 halves so far and one 40%....alot of the halves have ink marks on them, I have seen 5 different ink marks....other sorters in my area...disappointed. :-(
My CU minimum is 1000 bucks also...then it takes two and a halve weeks to get them in.
yep pennies are always winners! |
