guess what?!! i am the new chair person for the parent committee in my child's districtwide head start program. one of the things i will be promoting is safety, security and emergency preparedness as it pertains to preschoolers.--sorry guys, guns are off topic!!!
however i will be promoting CERT TRAINING to the parents, inviting the american red cross to teach a class to the children, and training stakeholders in using the fire extinguisher.

two things that i will be especially harping on is security for our children. once a month head start classes go to the park. we need lots of parents to volunteer. my own dd almost walked away to a stranger who was wearing the same shirt as her daddy. we both were there to make sure nothing happened to our dd. obviously things have to change. parents were not given specific jobs in advance, so i talked to the teacher today about that. i believe four parents should be given the job of watching N. S. E. W. to make sure no child walks away from the group.

also, i am promoting emergency packets for the preschoolers. the parents will chip in the money. we will buy the foods to be stored in individual plastic bags. then those in turn will be placed in new unused trash bins for safe keeping. here is where i need your input folks.

i need a list of the ten most needed items for a preschooler in the bag. give me two separeate lists. one for food that's easy to open for a child. the other having to do with hygiene and comfort. thanks guys.

Good luck.

But you might want to be prepared for the funny looks you'll get when you bring up toilet paper hoarding!

i have come up with a solution for the GO BAGS for the toddlers. ARMOUR STAR canned meals are perfect for the wee ones. they have mac & beef in tomato sauce, chicken and noodles with garden vegetables, lasagna, even a breakfast meal of hash. for this group of parents who are surviving with low to no income i think this is the best choice. what do you think?

Those are awfully high in sodium, maybe not the best things for kids to eat. How about small cans of fruit, graham crackers or other similar items?

actually those will be included as well. remember this is not for daily life, but emergency situation. so it won't be a long term thing by their standards. however, i will be planning two adult volunteer GO BAGS for the classroom as well. i'll be including EVEN MORE stuff. like beans and rice. unfortunately for the parents there is a limit as to the money that can be put in for these.

Caridad, I think healthful snacks would be perfect in any situation, and especially if there is an emergency that comes up, you want to provide kids with things that will be best for their health in the circumstances since stress can negatively impact anyone's health, especially in an emergency. Give kids nutritious snacks at home and just have more of the same packed in their bug-out bags.

well, today i spoke to the teacher about the GO BAGS. i brought in a can of ARMOUR STAR meal. it was outside the class next to a sign all day until the end of the day. SOMEONE walked away with it!!! oh, well. $1.00 gone from me. ANYWAY i asked the teacher is she had spoken to the teacher next to her about prepping. she hadn't. so i was invited to speak to her. i did.

turns out she's new to HEAD START. HEAD START is federally funded and is a different animal from state funded k-12. in fact there is friction there. we share the same resources, but it's paid through different agencies. what happens at lunch time? the cafeteria workers complain that H. S. has to be slightly different menu. boo hoo. but i digress.

the teacher who used to teach child care preschool under k-12 is this new teacher next to my dd class. she has not spoken to her class/parents about a GO BAG. she will go by the guidelines of the regular school district. she said she would speak to them about it. good luck because i already have. she's going to face a WALL!!! she is no longer in the school district!!! she's head start!!!

so she doesn't plan to do GO BAGS. she is expecting the cafeteria to feed her class as usual when chaos breaks loose. i mentioned, but what about if there is a lockdown? she says there's usually enough food there, that they would make do with. OK. she is on her own about this.

i was telling my dh that if a disaster hit, or a lockdown occurred, where they had to shelter in place, i can see her actually coming to my dd's class and asking us to share with her class. he said, $@#$%$# no. she can find her own food.

And the sad thing is that there are millions of others just like her who aren't seeing the big picture and who will try to get supplies when it's too late.

nick what she's gonna do is beg my child's class to share with her class. fortunately, the meals will be double portion for the kids.

Yeah, good luck with that--and she can go to Walmart when stuff runs out in an emergency:

I just saw a quote on another member's profile that applies in this case: Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. While I certainly plan to do everything I can to help children in my vicinity in need during an emergency, I will not help irresponsible adults. That's asking for nothing but trouble. Caridad, you might want to have a word with these other adults who are assuming that you will help them out in an emergency and let them know in no uncertain terms that you will not help them in an emergency if they will not even take steps now to prepare. It's not your fault if they don't prepare, and you're giving them ample notice that you won't make up for their irresponsibility.

thanks, n. i just feel like venting and you are my best sounding board! that teacher is a total sheeple!!! she honstly beleives that following the elementary school's policy she'll get somewhere. she needs to follow head start policy because there is a great divide there!! we are the red headed step child of elementary school. we do not go there for any reason. we are fenced off from the rest of the school. i had already spoken with the office before i talked to the teacher. she said she would talk to them so i did not bother telling her what they told me. WE ARE NOT A PART OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. WE ARE HEAD START: FEDERAL PRESCHOOL. they don't care. if THEY go on lockdown they may eventually let us know. unless the doors are opened h. s. can not hear the bells ringing. bells are used to sound the alarms. even the p.a. system is not heard there. they are too far removed.
it's not the same attitude at every school. at the school where i substituted they got along better because h.s. was situated NEXT TO the child care classrooms. they were not half way around the world on campus. they were in the middle of campus yet separated from upper elementary students. this h.s. DID participate in school emergency planning.

Caridad, what do you think about putting together a flyer for parents suggesting ways they can help their child be prepared in case of emergency (extra snacks, lunch, etc.)? You shouldn't be the one doing all of this on your own. I think you're probably in a good position to influence parents on what they can do to help their kids be prepared in case of emergency.
