Anyone concerned about getting sick due to our hobby of handling large amounts of filthy coins that who knows where they have been? Any precautions you take?

i dont worry about it too much. try not to eat or drink while sorting, dont put your hands near your face and wash them well when youre done.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

I wash my hands so often with antibacterial dish soap and alcohol I get hand rashes from the soap.
Then I use my wife's aveeno moisturizing lotion on them and they're good as new.

Copper is supposed to kill bacteria, right? That's my excuse for bathing in the stuff.

The thought crosses my mind every time I make a pick up. Especially pennies which tend to get treated like a filthy not to be discussed anyway! Multiple hand washings are a ritual for me.

Copper is an anti-microbial and germ killer and disinfects itself in about 15 mins. Also a good anti fungal.

Silver is a powerful anitibiotic and germ killer as well.

I think our hobby keeps us safer.

I wouldn't worry about deiseaes with proper hand washing... Now developing a nickel allergy is very well possible.

You won't get sick from this, but people with skin problems already can have more when handling a ton of nickel.

Viruses have a very short life span on inanimate objects. The serious infectious diseases such as HIV and viral hepatitis die on plain surfaces within about 15 seconds or less without a live host. You could conceivably worry about cold viruses or gastrointestinal viruses, but again, these are only going remain live for minutes to hours. Most of the boxes or rolls persons here are acquiring have been sitting for some time. Simply washing your hands with antibacterial soap after handing coins should suffice.

Just my two cents!

Copper kill bacteria. This is why boats use brass in stead of stainless. In a wet environment stainless will turn black because of bacteria and other microbes.

If anything it probably helps the immune system to be exposed to a variety of things in low doses. The rise in germ-phobic parenting has coincided with a rise in weird allergies and sensitivities. I figure eating well and exercising is easier and more effective than trying to insulate myself from exposure to anything.

I have copper in my veins.. lol. Get a good workout lifting bags and boxes of copper. If you want a lighter workout, just lift boxes of zinc. A box of disposable gloves will keep your hands clean. I like the Nitril rather than the Latex.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I wash after every 'sorting session' (hand sorting) with soap and water. After that I use a alcohol based hand cleanser just to be sure. And, as has already been said, I don't eat or drink while sorting, and try to keep from touching my face, specially with fingers that have been sorting pennies.

Some of the pennies, as most are aware, are really 'gucky' looking ... they get tossed into the 'take back' bag immediately without checking dates, etc.

It has been said 3 or 4 times now..... copper is a natural bacteria and virus killer... The only big concern with washing your hands is to get the gunk off.... you don't even have to use antibacterial soap!!! Germaphobia is over-rated.

I'm going to plate my house in copper!! (try that one on for size you germaphobes!! )

There was a thread like this a while back and I can remember one valid point that it made. While the coins themselves are anti-bacterial, if gunk, oil or sticky stuff get on the coins, it could breed all kinds of bad stuff.

So be sure to wash after a esp. dirty haul of coins. Also do not touch or eat any thing while sorting.

You could always buy those cotton coin gloves if you are really concerned about it. They are white and will turn black from the dirt. I just make sure to wash my hands after handling the coins.

What did he say????

The most common germ found would be Bacteria. Yes germs do live on coins, even if most of you believe this isn't possible.

Pin worm, Whip worm, e. coli can all be spread from coins.

It's really hard not to place the hand near something that will be later touched by your hands after washing. Thankfully the transmission rates are low.

If you will wash your hands with soap and water before you eat, most importantly after you touch anything dirty, other people, coins, money, floors, etc, you will find you are much healthier.

Antibacterial soap is not needed. Just soap and a good lather.

This is also a good protection from the flu.

The black is an oxide and will disolve in warm/hot water. Soap speeds the process and gets the other junk off.

I also wear copper jewelry mainly in the form of bracelets. 24/7 they are on, and it is rare to see me without a bit of green on my wrist.

I don't mind and between that and the handsorting, the arthritis in my hands doesn't bother me anymore. I have also seen where everyone around me, including the three others in my house get sick, and I feel fine .

Just wait when you're diagnosed with Wilson's Disease. It's not a joke i'd prefer to touch these pennies as little as possible. Everyone should have some kind of barrier on their hands while sorting. Whip Worm enters the host by burrowing through the skin, and would be safe from Iso or soap and water since these measures are taken after the sorting has taken place. Even intermitent breaks to wash hands would only reduce the risks.
But i'm being a little paranoid, and personally haven't worn my latex gloves in a little while.
