I would grade this FINE-12, cleaned. Wheat stalks on reverse are mostly visible, but have weak spots.

I also think this was cleaned. But the picture doesn't show the wheat stalks very well. They are full and bold with the coin in hand. Also, in the picture, it looks like the tops are blended, but they are not... full lines are present, though the tops of the lines are worn.

With this in mind, would you bump it up to F15 or VF20? I have it graded as such in my own mind, but more opinions are appreciated.

To get to VF-20, "all" the wheat stalks must be clearly separated, with some wear, but must not show any weak spots. On the obverse, nearly all the details on the hair and face will show. Truly bold wheat lines, with a deep chasm between the lines, are a characteristic of an EF or better coin.

Maybe you could call the 1931-S a FINE-15, but IMHO it is not VF-20. The cleaning detracts from the selling price of this coin.

Nice coin. Shame it was cleaned. Either way, key date.

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Try taking a pic with slightly less exposure. I think you will present a better image.

I agree cleaned... I do like the slightly woody grain though...

Part of the cleaning appearance is or may be due to the photo being so brightly made. If the coin really looks like that, I suggest leaving it on the inside of a kitched window sill for a few months. That usually tones down such cleaning appearances. Still a nice key dated coin. The real problem with the 31S is the amount of them that was hoarded in MS grades. Although the Mintage is really low, this keeps the value of all of them down.
