| I went through some rolls of pennies last week and came across a 1972 double die. However, the "1972" was clearly doubled but nothing else was. Any comments on this? |

For the double dated 1972 cent, From the red & blue books, varieties of double dies exist, some are more doubled than others. I am afriad I can't say how valuable this coin is, though finding such an error is another reward from coin hoarding.
(Wild guess on my part, $40, if the collectors don't like the price, the collectors don't get your coin.)

When it comes to researching error pennies, there is no better site than:
You must be logged in to see this link. (look for the "die variety search link" on the upper left)
Do a search for all 72 Philly mint errors. The best of the 72 double dies happens to be king of post wheatie double dies and runs $30 to $500 depending on condition. Is that what you have?
Or there is a less striking 72 double die that runs $2 to $45. |

Great site horgad. I go there myself a lot. But I thought the 1969-S was the king of the post wheatie double dies running up to $100K depending on condition. I haven't found one of those yet but I did find a 1970-S Double die.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I guess that they call the 1972 the king because it has the worst case of doubling, but I would take the rarer more valuable 1969-S over the king any day. |
