Like I said before, I have $9,000 in 5 cents bricks plus all the coins for the past 32 years which probably includes another $3,000 in nickels.

My question is, would I be wasting my time chenking them out for anything of value?

When I first change my first $1,000 for ten bricks of nickels I did open two rolls and found 6 foreign coins in them.......the rest of the bricks are still virgin.

Definetly, If you have rolls of nickels from thirty years ago that's thirty years less wear on your coins.

My grandfather has all circulation Jefferson Nickles -72 in AU-MS condition he got by sorting through rolls.

I personally wouldn't be able to resist the temptation. I would have already went through them.

The older $3k you mentioned would really temp me, I bet there are a lot of pre 82 Canadian nickels in there...

I thought of sorting through my nickels, but the idea of sorting a ton worth going on two just doesn't appeal to me now. Maybe in the future when I have more time and there is at least two feet of snow on the ground.

You'd probably find buffalos and war nickels. Definitely worth it!

Ponce, if the nickel boxes are dated or some way recognizable as "virgin" and from a certain year they might actually have automatic "numismatic" value due to being "bank wrapped rolls from 19XX". If that is the case definitely do not search them as you have some automatic rarities with zero effort!

And those rarities (the virgin bank wrapped rolls) will become more valuable once nickels are made of steel.

I'd say, search if you're bored, or selling some off. Otherwise why bother them and their current preserved condition.

JobIII, I got them not for the current monetary value but as a survivalist tool (as per my silver)because when the time comes they will be worth more than a dollar, or in other words, people will choose metal over paper.

I see... And have you stopped taking any prescribed neuroleptics lately? Perhaps the thorazine or Li doses are running a bit low. But seriously, if you hoarded them for 'survivalist tools' or monetary gains, i'd only see it worth your time if you have lots of time to kill, or you're trying to make a buck. But by selling the good ones your hoard could grow bigger :)

OK, I first checked out my bottle ontop of my tv for all my change for the past two months and found a Cuban 10 cents coin......not from me......also found like what appears to be a silver quarter from France and it says "1 Franc", and two car wash tokens.

I then open up a brick and found a bunch of nickels with a "P" plus two 1970 with an "S"......also a 1939 nickel......anything to be happy about?????

I must be very bored to be doing this hahahahahahahhahaha.

That 1 Franc if it is dated '60 thru '00 is 6 grams of Ni.

Keep aside all pre '82 Canadians. They are Ni.
Keep aside all '42 thru '45 that have a big prominent mint mark above the Monticello on the reverse. They are 35% Ag.

The rest is numismatic and up to you to determine if it is worth your time to hunt for it and put it aside.

Thanks Bluegill, only eight rolls were open and I got bored......nothing from Canada.

About the ones with a "P", keep them? there were not to many of them.... most of them "D".

The "Franc" is a 71.

If you are talking about the 1942-1945s, then ALL nickels should be 35% AG (P, D, S).

Personally, I would seperate your nickels as following:

1. Buffalo Nickels (numismatic)
2. 1938-1941, 1946-1959 nickels (numismatic)
3. War Nickels 1942-1945, (35% silver)
4. S-mint Nickels (numismatic)
5. Pre-82 Canadian (pure-nickel)
6. Post-82 Canadian (fiat face value)
7. Other foreign (who knows what you'll find)
8. All other nickels (the bulk of your nickels)

Actually in 1942, the US minted both regular nickel composition nickels and then the War Nickels that have the large mint mark above the dome on the reverse. It wasn't until October 8, 1942, that the war time composition that contains 35% silver was introduced. That was also the first time that the letter P was used as a mint mark.

The regular pre-war composition 1942D has a substantial error of a D over a horizontal D. Something to look for to keep you from becoming bored.

Enjoy.
