The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life. – Theodore Roosevelt

The 1916 D Mercury is the Holy Grail to so many collectors. I think that just about anyone who is involved in the hobby, even in the least way, knows how rare the coin is. I remember my father's old Mercury book... all taped together and looking like it's been run over a few times, and then in a bar fight, and then used as a cat's scratching post... But, when I opened it up, all these shiny and some not-so-shiny coins would be staring out at me. The one thing that I'll remember most about it was the little cardboard tab that you had to take out where the 1916 D should go. On it, in bold type was, "RARE".
I don't know if the current Whitman books have that same little cardboard tab, but if you've seen or got one of these books, you'd forever be searching for that rare coin.
And to think that a little worn coin with bad rims and her hair worked off through so much change-making could be worth 500 $2 bills in today's market!
I still haven't found mine... but maybe someday I'll luck out enough to just see one. |
