I am seeing more and more anecdotal evidence of increasing awareness of the value of a copper value.

1. I am starting to get more crap zinc boxes from the bank

2. Today an old guy commented to me as I was carrying in a bucket of zinc pennies to the credit union: "You know I think those are worth more at a scrapyard than here." He didn't, of course, realize that they were sorted zinc and that melting pennies is illegal and no scrap yard would take them.

3. The credit union commented that they had somebody in the day before me returning pennies and that they now had $1,100 pennies in the vault (110,000 pennies...half of which came from me).

4. One of the banks that I pick pennies up from commented that they now had 2-3 people placing large penny orders.

I wonder if I am neighbors with somebody else on this board or if this board represents a only small fraction of the penny sorting/hoarding that is going on...

I suppose it's possible that you could live near someone else that posts here, but I'm sure that there are many people in the general population doing this. There are a few people I work with that are big into scrap metal that are very aware of how the price of base metals has risen over the past few years and it doesn't take much research for them to find out the metal content in circulated coins. I also think many people come here just to read threads without posting. I know I did for close to 6 months before I ever posted and I was sorting the whole time. I believe there is a mechanism in place to monitor when someone comes to this board. Is there something that tracks how many hits this board gets? Besides that, there are still plenty of people that are not internet savvy that could be interested in doing this.

There is nothing in the controls that keeps count of the hits we get........that I know of. The Admin. Controls here is a scary place for a guy like with me with limited computer skills. So I avoid them for fear of messing up the site for good. :)

Copper hunters are not the only competition we have for cent rolls.
There are coin collectors that intentionally search for the rare finds we get (wheats, the occasional Indian head.)

Though half dollar rolls are the main goal for numismatic searchers, few of them would turn up their noses to looking through a roll of cents. As forum member Carl has pointed out, there are rarities and errors that can still be found in the penny rolls.

Looks like there is a bit more competition for copper cents than first met the eye.

I should have chosen "Cut-n-Paste" as a forum name, since that is what I do, mostly.

This is true. There are many coin roll hunters that mainly search halves for silver, but many of them look for wheats & Indian heads. I got the link for treasurenet.com here and they have devoted several threads on the pros & cons of hoarding copper cents.

AHHH, so you found out about the scrap police HUH? A secret branch of the postage stamp police, library late book return police and the fake flowers in your back yard police. Yes they monitor this forum and report hoarders to the coin dealers at coin shows. Then they will come for your hoarded coins for resale.
Come on now. As if our government has nothing better to do than check out web sites like this. Better chance they are watching web sites about thier elections. If you can tear them away from thier vacations, that is.

Look, just carl, I KNOW that the scrap police & the postage stamp police are myths, but once you start to joke about the library police it just tells me that you aren't aware of the secret inner workings in todays public library system. See what happens the next time you are 2 days late with your library books. Trust me, nobody in today's world is prepared for what happens when the library police come knocking at your door. I heard it from a coworker who had a friend who had a cousin who heard of somebody that disappeared after having skipped paying a fine on a past due copy of "The Da Vinci Code."

Obviously another person that saw that episode on Sinfield about the Library police. A neighbor of mine is a person on some kind of board of the Library and assures me that if you think this is a joke of not returning books or items taken out of the Library, note the missing people reports.
