Could I get some advice from those of you in the know as to what banks carry penny bags, or at least allow bags, rather than the boxes? I am probably a small-medium hoarder, and I am already getting tired of opening the rolls. Thanks in advance for the info.
This is the first thread I have opened. I did do a search to see if this was previously covered. If so, I apologize.

Search feature here sucks. Yes, been covered hundreds of times. You have to just ask. Obviously they must have a counter that also sorts, or no go. I don't think there are any particular banks that all branches are "friendly" to us. Varries so much from state to state and region to region. Try joining a credit union. Those tend to be more flexible, at least around here. That will give you a start. Good luck.

| You can start by cold-calling and I have done that . They will let you know if you need a account to get pennies. Then see what they do for you before you open your account with them. |

I'm old school, I prefer to conduct business face to face like human beings. Instead of phone, e-mail, text, twits, etc... With this hobby, I especially recommend it. JMHO.
Yes, banks/CU's will require an account if your doing anything more than an occasional drive by (at least in my parts I have found that true).

| Yes, I would recommend going to the bank in person. I use a CU to get my pennies and the big banks to dump. No problem with anything I ask for as long as I give them some notice. You can also ask what days they get pickups and deliveries. |

Actually most banks without counting machines still bag the coin to be returned. So if you were so inclined to ask these banks would also provide bags if they liked you. |

Really? How would the bank know how much coin was in the bag without a counter? On what basis would they come to a price for you to buy them without a counter? If they dont have a counter the coin must be rolled. At least everywhere I've been....

you pretty much need an account, but I wasted a lot of time opening accounts at banks that weren't helpful, so do you legwork first.
your best luck will be at banks that have counters in the lobby. most of those will sell you their full bags, but some won't for a variety of reasons. a lot of times it pertains to security, so don't push it.
some members can get their banks to order bags, but that is extremely rare. still, it doesn't hurt to ask. if a bank can do that its probably cheaper for them because they don't have to pay for rolling.
if you call banks, do it during non-peak hours like mid morning. don't call during the lunch rush or friday afternoons.
if you visit a branch, ask for the vault teller. tell them you have a question about ordering coin and request the vault teller. a lot of tellers are relatively inexperienced and will give you the wrong answer either through ignorance or lazieness.
it doesnt hurt to ask. just tell them you are a coin collector and enjoy looking through lots of coins. tell them you'll move your business to them if they can do this for you. tell them you promise not to return coins to them. keep your word. if they don't want your business, its their choice. |

| Thanks, Lemon Thrower. I have found the lunch hour to be the best time for me to work with my main pick-up bank. All of the senior tellers are at lunch. I am left with all of the 20-year-olds, who are in good moods, and likely see me as a novelty. "Did you also order dimes?" "Do you need dimes?" they ask. "Can we carry your boxes (8) to your car?" I am thinking to myself, SCORE! This is just the kind of relationship I need with my bank. But they don't do bags :(. |

I've had 2 different head tellers tell me they break open rolls and then bag and seal the loose coin for shipment to the fed.
The one and only time I have ever been able to acquire a bag of loose pennies was at a Citizens bank. It was a right time time/right place situation. The bag was labeled and waiting for pick up. They were willing to sell it to me to avoid a charge to ship it out.
I can see why you folks with Ryedales love them, just open and pour.

| I do have some friends that work at banks, just not in my area. I have been told by them that it does not matter how customers deposit coins. Loose coins are bagged. Rolled coins are broken down and recounted/sorted into bags to be shipped to the Fed. This is done as per bank policy. They don't want so much as one shorted cent lost within the books. I have read somewhere on here that certain members with counting and rolling machines actually supply certain banks with pennies. This must take some sort of a premier relationship with the bank. |

I love love love my bags. I pour mine in my high speed counter to get the cruddy ones out then pour into the Ryedales. This process usually prevents jams. I ran $1500 this way and had less than 5 jams. Sometimes all it takes it something a little sticky or corroded to slow that penny down just enough for the next one to catch up and cause a jam.
Credit Unions are the way to go. The ones that I dump at won't sell. The ones that I buy from cut me off from dumping...so it worked out perfect. |
