I was going through my Pennies the other Day and came across what seemed to be a Copper 1983 Penny, I know they stopped making Copper Pennies in 82 but i heard that some 83 Pennies were Errored and made of copper instead of Zinc, IS this a common error? Or is this like rare?

It would be quite rare, but is certainly possible. First, put it on a scale and tell us the weight. |

Make a balance scale with a pencil and a popsicle stick. Put a pre 82 on one end, put your error coin on the other and see if it is heavy enough to be copper. Replace the copper penny with a zincoln, and your error coin should drop to the surface if it is copper. |

drop test it on a wooden table. there is a very distinct difference between the copper and zinc. copper rings...zinc is a thud. |

If it is in bad condition it may only fetch $25 or $100. But if it is really nice it could be worth quite a lot. But you'd need to send it to a certification company(PCGS, etc) to be sure it is authentic and to get the best price! |

Hi Coincolectern,
I think the coin you have may be a brass 1983, or whatever those non-copper year coins happen to be. We've all seen them, they look yellowish in appearance and stand out from the typical zinc pennies. But I could be wrong.

JOBIII..... what?
It should either be 95% copper or 97% zinc. Standard US Cent metal compositions. |

There's no Brass Coin, Pennis were made out of 95% copper and 5 % zinc, or 97.5% zing and 2.5% copper and I'm going to get a scale soon so I'll be able to find out for sure |

According to JOBIII 's link, the 'brass' planchet is only a Zinc penny with a slightly different plating. Not hardly quallifying it as a Brass penny.
If your's is heavier than a zinc it is either Copper, fake, or a zinc cent that has been plated/coated with copper or brass MORE than normal(fraudulently) to give it the appearance/weight of a copper cent.
If it is a copper cent it should be worth a lot of money! But don't get your hopes too high! |

I actually did and half the time its balanced with a copper and the other times its lighter. And when i did it with a zinc half the time it looks as it's heavier and the other times it doesn't. Next time I go to target I'm buying a scale and a magnifying glass |

I think you'll find better deals for a scale online than at target and same with a magnifying glass. Personally i don't like using standard magnifying glass because they don't enlarge enough. I recommend you bring some coins with you so you get a good idea of what magnification you desire. |

Bounce it on a wooden cutting board or table top, Copper will ring, Zink will thud. Listen to known samples for reference.
Put me down on the list for "Hope it's Copper!" |

Here is an idea-
Go to a jeweler who buys gold and ask him or her if they would weigh this penny for you (jewelers usually have sensitive scales to weigh gram weight of gold). If they ask you why just tell them the truth, it might be a rare penny but you have your doubts. (You don't have to tell them the top dollar price for the penny, just that it might go for $25 or so.) If it comes in at 3 grams or more then it is copper. I know the mint said that copper cents were minted at 3.11 grams, but I have noticed that many copper 1982 cents come in under 3.11 grams, I used a nail file to file at the edge of underweight 82's to verify they are copper.
*****************************************
I think there was mentioned somewhere that a 1989D penny was found that also was made from a 95% copper planchet. |

If you do go to a jeweler to weigh the coin, please make it worth the jewelers time and buy a small sterling silver item from them. (Nobody likes a customer who only window shops.) |

I disagree with Keys.
A small sterling item at a jeweler could easily cost $15 or $30. Money you wouldn't spend if it wasn't for this cent. Unless he has one ounce American silver eagles that he is selling for $20. That would be a fine purchase and thank you for his time.
If I was you, ask the jeweler to help. If he does and it DOES turn out to be copper.... then when you sell it or get it graded, or verified.... then go back and spend $15-$30 at that jeweler's. If he won't do it for you, then you know you don't ever need to shop there. He shouldn't be to SNOTTY to do it for you, if so, then he is too good for your money too. |

I doubt if you are going to find a 1983 penny on a copper planchet, but if you do, it should weigh about 3.11 grams and it would be worth a substantial amount. In my experiment with 1982's I found that about 80% were copper and 20% were zinc. I checked less than 25 pennies.
