Poll Question:
Just curious what everyone thought about searching for silver and copper in bank rolls.
Given the current amount of silver and copper still in circulation what is a better way to find bullion that can turn a profit.

I don't know how I would search for both copper and silver; I barely have time to do the $150 a week I sort for copper pennies.
Has anyone on here made this into a full time job? |

| It seems like sorting halves is the best way to get a profit right now, but I'm getting tired of all these skunks. I love pennies because the skunks can be better than getting the regular zinc and copper mix. |

| I'm trying to swing 4-5 hundred pennies and 2-3 k in halves a week... It gets tough when you look for variety and errors in the zinc years. But who needs a life outside of work and coining. |

Have you found enough of these to make it worth it? I have a pile of zinc I was going to start going through, but have no idea if its something I want to get into or not. I found a couple 1960 small dates just as a test to see if I could find something. Haven't looked for any other varieties so far. What kind of success are you having? |

| I personally have had alot of success searching for errors. You can also look at the Numismatics section and see what everyone else has found. |

| Lets not forget about Nickel. Our friend in the frosty north are sorting Canadian nickels to find a dime worth of 99.999% Ni. |

Nothing against nickel sorting, but i'm not sure it's really worth it in the US right now. Most of the nickels don't melt above 5 cents.
Giddy, I think it's completely up to you. Aside from work, I spend about all my waking time sorting, searching, and picking-up/returning. Some varieties you find 1 in $25 others 1 $1000. It's up to you to decide where to draw the line. I've made my choice based on the rate I find them. Also copper year errors are great because you don't even need to look at them when you sort for copper. Hold onto them in the copper pile and go back when you have time. It's the zincs you're most likely going to return and need to look at them fast or you'll tie your funds up with error searching. |

Does anyone sort as their main or sole income?
Sometimes I daydream that I could yardsale on the weekends, sort pennies and look for scrap during the week and not have to work a regular full time job. I know most of you are thinking keep dreaming. |

It seems completely possible on paper, but it would be incredible.
lets say your goal is 2k a month profit. You have a buyer that will purchase at 1.3xFV. After shipping you're walking away with 1.2xfv. So you'd need to sell 10k in coppers a month to make your goal.
Assuming 25% will be Cu you'd need to search 40k a month. or 1600 boxes of pennies. 400 boxes a week. Assuming no breaks in the loading and no jams. IT would take about 56 hours with 1 ryedale to sort a weeks worth of pennies...or 27 hours if you were sucking down black betty's or bennies like Kerouac :)
Right now that seems a little too much work. Though you would certainly make a little extra from the wheaties and IHC's you would certainly find. But the banks would hate you. |

| Seriously if you were proactive. you could search 10k in halves with 100 dollars. Granted it would become a problem once you started finding silvers :) |

Its in the Copper Penny Bullion Investing forum so most people on the forum already sort copper.
Personally I think sorting pennies is better for me that's why i have not sorted halves for about a year. I have more time than i do money. If i had a large amount of money and not much time i would sort all half's and dimes. My guess is i can make .5%-1% sorting half's while making 7%-9% sorting pennies. |

Pennies are easier to obtain and find copper but then again silver is harder but much more valuable
But the thrill of finding something rare is always fun no? |
Must hoard more...... |

| I think it has to be the variable rate of return we see when looking for silver is what has me hooked with the whole process. Copper still seems to be just about the easiest thing aside from hoarding NiCu us Nickels. |

| I personally mix it up. I try to keep $1000 for only searching halfs. My other disposable income goes to getting pennies and nickels. When I get short on time to sort, I pick up more nickels than pennies. It is so fast to sort through a box of halfs I always get those and do pennies in between. |
Running total: Halves searched:$14,445.50 90% found: 122 40% found: 481
Dimes Searched $2100 Found: 5 |

What about 83 and 97 for error/variety?
There's also 88, a biggie in 92, 94, 96, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, and possible errors/varieties in 2007, 2008 and of course we all know of the myriad of those in the 2009 coins.
Keeps me well entertained going through all of my pennies. But it is a fun and inexpensive hobby.
Enjoy. |

I don't have time to sort silver for the low returns you guys report, though I'd be the first to admit that it would be a thrill to discover the occasional find. I like pennies for the constant reinforcement, they may not have a market yet but still my brain goes kaching every time I pull out a CU. My problem is sources, another bank shut me down today! |

| Beauanderos. You have to pace yourself. Some banks will do that others if you build good relations first before ordering large amounts may be less likely to close you out down the road. |
