How many of you cook with cast iron and what do you cook? Myself I have several dutch ovens and 4 pans. Love to fry chicken in the pans and nothing beats a venison stew on a cold night in the dutch oven!

Beer biscuits in a dutch oven on a camp fire. Mexican Corn Bread in a large skillet in the oven. Hubby loves a great big pan of fried potatoes cooked in his mothers old iron skillet. Everything cooks better in cast iron.

And cast iron is much easier to maintain than Teflon-coated anything. Figuring that it's been used for thousands of years, I'd say cast iron would be a great item to have.

Teflon is nasty poisonous stuff. It actually emits toxic gas when heated above 400 degrees. That stuff is banned from my house.

I mostly use my cast iron when camping, and stainless at home (I do use the dutch oven at home too). If I had to choose between the two, I would take the cast iron.

Yep. My wife loves her cast iron stuff even though she struggles with the weight of some of it.

I called Wally World a couple days ago and can't believe they don't carry cast iron skillets! What's the deal, don't they make those in China anymore? Any suggestions on where to get cast iron?

Go to yard sales. I went to a yard sale last weekend and they were selling their big cast iron pots for $10 a piece.

You might check at Army Surplus stores. I have found a really good supply there. Haven't been to one in years so not sure if they still carry them. Yard Sales and Thrift Stores would be more cost effective, it is usually quite expensive new.

If you want new, You must be logged in to see this link.

Linens 'n Things carried them, but they are out of business. I don't know if Bed Bath and Beyond would carry them. Any good hardware store should have them.

old ones are better, wagner and some other brands being the best. They still carry a bit of a premium. Try flea markets and consignment shops. You might end up paying more than the "new" stuff but the older stuff is a lot better.

If you cannot afford Lodge or another premium cast iron cookware brand you can still get a good set from some of the less expensive brands such as "Stansport". Some important things to consider when buying the newer "cheap" brands of cast iron cookware:

1. Find a pot (skillet, Dutch oven, etc.) that has no casting defects such as pits, thin spots and voids, is not warped or distorted. Now do the same with the lids.

2. Take the best pot you can find and then try the lids one at a time to find the best fitting one. Do this by placing the lid on the pot a rotating it 360 degrees ensuring that the lid fits flush on the top and does not rise up anywhere along the edge.

3. Make sure that the handle is firmly attached to the pot.

I prefer Lodge brand because they are very well made, but I have bought a couple of Stansports to save money. I had to go through about a dozen pots and lids to find a good fit and no discernable flaws. The ones I bought work fine and did save a lot of money.

I store mine in an old steel ammo can with a couple of dessicant bags and they are rust free after several years. Just make sure to properly season them ant to NEVER wash them with soap or detergent as that will ruin the seasoning. Just scrape off as much food as you can and boil some clean water in them then wipe them clean with a dry towel. When they ared clean just rub on a thin layer of cooking oil and they will be perfectly fine.

Most larger stores that are carry a wide range of camping supplies should have these.

I loved using mine when I was younger and didn't suffer from health issues. Can't lift mine up at all now so I had to quick cooking in it. My mom always said that if you cooked in cast iron then the food would retain more of their good nutritional values. Don't know if that is true or not.

I never thought of Cracker Barry, City38, but my girlfriend and I may be going there for dinner tomorrow, so I'll keep an eye out for a skillet.

City38, you were right. My girlfriend and I went to Cracker Barrel for dinner on Friday, and I got a cast iron skillet for $20. Thanks for the tip!

Odd. I met with a guy that works for Lodge Foundry this April in Vegas, at our Casting Congress. He said that Lodge is now selling direct to WalMart and their line of pre-seasoned cast iron cookware has become very popular and had really increased sales volume.
