Saw on the news what (supposedly) happens to the clunkers when they get turned in for the cash for clunkers deal.

The oil is drained from the car and sodium silicate (liquid glass)
is added then the engine is started until the motor dies.

Parts of the clunker are recycled (go to used car parts sellers.)

The frame and engine go to a shredder and that metal has to go somewhere (think China, think India.)

This shredded up material (steel, aluminum, brass in the radiator and heater core) will eventually be recycled and will undoubtedly effect the price of steel, aluminum and brass and copper.

I mentioned that 'supposedly' the clunkers will be removed from the road, but I have a feeling that some unscrupulous car dealers are going to find a way to resell these clunkers (maybe the car dealer will work out a deal with a scrap dealer to fake shredding the car, sell the clunker and split the profits with the scap dealer. I have no evidence this will happen but shady deals always seem to pop up whenever government money is concerned.)

I change with the times-
but like silver coins found in your change
I stay the same.

Are you sure about that?? I was told that the government, in its infinite stupidity, didn't allow ANY parts to be salvaged no matter what, period, that EVERYTHING was to be sent to the grinder--no recycling of the platinum in the catalytic converter, no stripping of other parts, etc. I hope I'm wrong on this, but I won't put this past the government to totally waste cars just because they can.

Apparently parts from clunkers will end up in used auto parts sellers.

"Under the government plan the clunker can go to a salvage yard like Shorty's where some parts can be recycled.
"You have doors, hoods, lights some computer stuff radioes," said Shorty Schultz of Shorty's Auto Parts."

This came straight from the horse's mouth (or in this case, straight from the car parts recycler.)

Interesting. The articles I read previously on a couple sites conveyed that salvagers were upset because all the parts had to be destroyed.

Same here. Huh....

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Looks like this "stimulus" isn't doing much for charitable car donations:

Here's another perspective I hadn't thought of, that increased car sales now could hurt holiday sales:

I was just at a salvage yard today looking for a part with my nephew for his Ranger. I saw the vehicles that were part of this absurd program loaded on the semi trailers ready to go out. They were whole and intact, the engines destroyed and no parts allowed to come off. Many of them were in excellent condition. The waste made me sick to my stomach.

The PTB are gonna get politically incorrect vehicles off the road no matter what it takes. Allowing them to be used for parts to repair other politically incorrect vehicles ain't gonna happen.

Only a matter of time before aftermarket parts manufacturers aren't allowed to make parts for certain vehicles...

Only a matter of time before scrapping politically incorrect cars becomes mandatory... There will be a grace period where Ma ma Government will give you some compensation. Then the vehicle (and parts) will become contraband.
