I have been mainly hoarding pennies, but I have also searched through about $1200 in halves. Thus far I have found only 3 40% halves! Anyone have any better luck or any advice to find more? |

I think the conventional wisdom is "keep sorting". I burned through about $1500 worth of halfs with pretty dismal results, but then I got some good results on my lask box of $500...the only bad thing is that now I am going to go and get another box...if I had gotten skunked on the last box, I probably would have quit.
It also helps to think of this as a game of pull tabs, with no downside risk... |

Silver1234 Just did my first $500.00 box. Found a walker & a franklin & a few 40%'s. The GODS must have been smiling. This makes up for the 10 boxes of pennies I got with 100% zincs in the same batch Win some - Lose some just keep trying. 3 is better than none. At least it covers gas. Good Luck. |

Koprhed, I find your comparison to sorting halves and pull tabs interesting. Only drawback is when I finished I had to re-roll. Correctly put there is no downside risk. Only investment is TIME & gas. |

If you are already going to the bank to pick up pennies getting halves doesn't cost you a lot of time and gas. Besides, it increases your odds of finding something good and can cover you if you get skunked on pennies.
In December I stopped at one of my banks right before they closed to pick up some pennies. They didn't have hardly any pennies, but when I asked they had 6 rolls of halves. Out of those rolls I got 99 Silver coins.. 88 90% and 11 40%! Lots of Franklins and Walkers. I get skunked on halves all the time, but a day like that certainly keeps hope alive. You just never know when you might get a visit from the Silver Santa!

Wow nice haul HCBTT!! I dont know what I would do if I came across something like that. I was pretty happy to find my first 40% half in a box, but if there were 99...wow. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

I try and get a few halfs. So far I have been able to get 8 -- 40%. Just enough to keep me coming back. |

Sorting half dollar coins all depends on being at the right place at the right time. The ability to tie up $1k for a day or to also helps a lot.
Just walk up to your friendly banking staff and ask if they have any half dollars so you can complete your collection. (If they ask what dates you need, tell them 1976'S, 1987 or better yet 1975.) After they helpfully look through their coin tray ask if they have any rolls in their drawer or if there are any rolls in the vault you can buy. I usually have have ever teller telling me (Ahh! Lookey there son, I typed a funny!) if they have any rolls and/or looking for '87's.
Every now and then you'll get a snooty, "Are you a member?", and be told you are not worthy to waste their time by asking to buy coins. Just move on to the next bank.
Some times I get enthusiastic (usually younger) tellers literally running over to ask me if I want to buy the silver ones they have. (You MUST remain cool under that kind of pressure!)
I've gazed at over $3K and only found a ruined proof. And, I've been handed rolls that have "Old Silver" printed on them that were only Ben's and Walkers. Don't be discouraged by you first $1.2K not producing. Keep at it! And, always ask if you can buy bags from the branches that have counters. Don't forget to leave your phone number and stop back in a week or two. |
There's profit if you melt things!! 8{> |
