I've seen some posts on here of how people finding 1 war nickel per box. That seems the norm for me too.

How long do you think that kind of average will last?

Do you think that those war nickels we find have truly been in circulation (since most non-coin collectors wouldn't know to look for the big mint mark)?

In theory, all war nickels and other silver coins should have completely disappeared from circulation in 1970.

From what I am seeing, when hoarders die, the heirs cash in the coins at face value at the bank. Sometimes with luck, entire rolls of silver can be intercepted at the bank, but quite often they are dispersed by the banks or merchants and you see them back in circulation.

I think that it will last until the general public figure it out just like copper pennies.

As long as nickels circulate.

The elderly old lady who is all-knowing and could hardly wait to bury the poor dumb sap will bring them to the bank.

Most people, even many coin collectors, don't even know about war nickels. If most are out of circulation it isn't primarily because of their 35% silver content. They are out because they just got lost or because they were pulled out because they were an "old date nickel".

Until our five cent pieces are made of tin, aluminum or steel. Then all of the current silvers, along with the copper-nickels will be pulled!

That's exactly how I got the bulk of my war nickels. A little old lady brought 50 rolls to the bank to cash them in. The teller who got them turned them into my wife who is the head teller and runs the safe. Turns out 38 rolls were completely war nickels sorted by years and mint and the rest were from the 50's sorted by year and mint. Now they are mine.

"when hoarders die, the heirs cash in the coins at face value at the bank."

Why would people do this?

A) Ignorance.
B) Excessive wealth.

I wish someone near me would start cashing in some AU barbers in any denomination!

The first time I pulled coins from banks rolls was over 30 yrs (when I was teenager) and the pickings were slim back then (I remember finding 1 silver coin out of several hundred searched). I took a break for 30 yrs after silver skyrocketed to $50/oz in 1980 because I assumed silver was gone forever from circulation for sure.

What I found astonishing when I resumed coin searching about 2 years ago was that silver was still findable in circulation.
The first roll I cracked open after 30 years, had a 1961 silver dime and 1943 US mercury dime.
In the last two years I have found 300+ silver dimes, 30+ silver quarters and 3 US war nickels.

It seems to be constant cycle, people hoard, they die and many of their heirs not realizing the value throw the hoards back into circulation.

I seem to average a much lesser percentage than most do in their nickel searches.

However, the very first roll searched in 2011 produced a WN for me. Haven't been very successful finding the .999 Canadian nickel nickels lately either.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone.
