The Associated Press --
SAVANNAH, Ga. --
The government has sold 743 gold coins seized at Savannah's port for $575,000, months after they were found in a tractor tire inside a cargo container from the Dominican Republic, authorities said. The one-ounce coins - 361 U.S. Gold Eagles, 380 South African Krugerrands and two Australian Gold Nuggets - were forfeited under a Sept. 19 court order covering merchandise illegally introduced into the United States as proceeds exchanged for a controlled substance, U.S. Attorney Edmund A. Booth Jr. said Wednesday. It was unclear if investigators had any idea who owned the gold, where it was being shipped or what sort of scheme was involved. Booth said the coins were inside high-pressure tubing, capped at the ends, located in a tractor tire. A drug dog exhibited a possible alert on the tubes for odors associated with narcotics, the prosecutor said.
