I was dumping six thousand halves and met a gentleman at the coin counter who just retired after 30 years from Brinks.

He worked the rolling machines and had 3-6 going at a time.

He said he and others would routinely pull all the silver from the basin (before rolling) after filling them from the clear plastic bags of coins from The Fed.

He said The Fed stopped using cloth bags because they were too expensive.

He said Brinks allowed the practice as long as they replaced the coins they took. He related that he got his first house with the money from silver.

I often think about this and feel we only get the coins they miss.

Pickens were slim yesterday from five boxes I have yet to post.

Just a FYI probably known by most.

They aren't dummies!

Not every brinks employee pulls out silver though. Their "super sorter" sorts out the silver but they just throw it back in with the rest of the coin....at least at a few locations that I know about.

Seems strange that they would allow employees to take out money "as long as they replaced it". Seems like that would be a nightmare to keep track of. I would think their policy would be to have employees wear coveralls with no pockets in them and that they would not be able to do anything with the money other than run it through the machines.

Interesting, I had always heard that Brinks didnt cull silver. I guess Brinks doesnt but their employees would be allowed to. Wonder if all other carriers are like that? I would assume if employees are allowed to then there most be some that dont give a rats arse and let those Brinks dream boxes get through for some I have seen.

I get my halves from Brink's. My local Brink's ran out of halves, went to the FED, and got bags and bags of BU halves. I've received 41 of these boxes - over 20 FED BU bags worth so far. If the FED (Richmond, VA - District 5) is supplying BU halves in quantity, it could mean that they have run out of circulated halves because the demand caused by the numerous SILVER half searchers has wiped out the supply of circulated halves and they are beginning to supply Brink's and other service companies with the BU halves they have in storage. In general, I think most of the SILVER at the FED has now been culled out by searchers like us. Brink's get supplied with some halves as banks open paper rolls, dump them in the FED plastic return bags, and sends them on to Brink's for re-rolling and re-boxing. As the demand for halves comes to Brink's, some of these re-rolled halves will contain some SILVERs, but only to the extent the public turns in halves recently. This should continue, but will limited to the SILVERs held by the public and turned into banks. As time passes, SILVERs held by the public will dwindle away as there will be fewer and fewer stashes of halves that have not really circulated in over 50 years.

I actually think that, because of the economy, and due to small stashes of these halves that were socked away by prudent parents of baby boomers... that now that these boomers are receiving these coins via inheritance a number of them will appear in our boxes. I think numbers might improve slightly for a year or two... but if silver explodes in value you won't see any more of them.

Country and beauanderos,

I believe all my finds are from recent returns to circulation.

My find percentage is very low and believe this is is the few coins that return.

I do believe this old man and his tale. I would also believe that whatever facility he worked in probably let the employees cull silver. He worked thirty years and got a pension. Long time trusted employee. It could very well be that this policy was unique to his facility. I think my point in relating the story is that there must be services that are still taking silver. Maybe there are time constraints and they cannot get it all.

Many of the coins I find are pretty rough and do not stand out like the bright ones.

I think there may still be silver searchers in some of the coin processing facilities. When I search dimes, I find about the same amountof silver in paper wrapped rolls as most other people here do according to the silver find thread. However, the company that has plastic wrapped rolls here has absolutley 0 silver coins unless they are dirty. I think there is somebody who is quickly edge sorting the rolls before they get packed into the boxes. They miss the dirty ones. I can not think of any other reason why I have never found a clean silver in the clear rolls in my area.

I have searched dimes from time to time. My dime rolls are plastic wrapped too. I find maybe two SILVER dimes every 5 $250 boxes. I edge searched them. Those I saw were mostly clear SILVER edges. So, I think the production of your SILVER from dimes may depend on a persons searching area - some folks find SILVER dimes, some folks find it's not worth the bother.

the silver I've been finding since I started a month ago has been pretty beat up or just chameleon silver... trying to hide amongst the others by adopting their coloration

In addition to the armored services culling silver, the banks are culling them when they return from customers. One vault teller told me she scans all the plastic wrapped dimes before she distributes them, and pulls any silver she sees. A bank manager at a small bank told me he personally goes thru all of the coin machine bags before returning them to the armored service company. I was in a WellsFargo branch one day when an older couple returned a large bag of coins; the tellers fell upon that bag like parana --- I asked what was in the bag, but was told it was bank business and none of mime ---- I really wanted to know what they were hopping around about on that table in the back, but I realize their greed is no differnt than mine. Silver is being pulled at every station, not just the armored services. This is a diminishing return hobby. I have been doing this for 3 or 4 years now; I really believe that I see a sharp decline in the concentration of silver. I have many consequitive 0-yield boxes, and I did not when I first started. I almost never see a 90% silver half any more. I cannot say that dimes or quarters have diminished, because I only started dimes/quarters recently, when the half dollar yields fell to such low levels.
