I started filling wheat penny folders in 2006, and I'm about halfway done, with 71 out of 140 wheats. All but four of my holes are pre-1940.

Ive always collected wheats that I saw in the wild, but I only started going through boxes and getting a bunch of them two years ago. Now I have 70 so I'm about halfway done, and still missing all of the hard ones. Finding a wheat is always fun, but its even better when it fills in one of the many holes =D

Loved reading this thread. It made me want to see how many I had left to go in my childhood wheat collection. You know, the one where I thought all coins where supposed to be super shiny and so I cleaned them with comet when I was about 12...sigh (Yes I am afraid I really did do that unfortunatly)

So I get out my folder just now and Yikes! I am missing the unlucky number of 13!!
I will defintly have to find at least one more like REALLY fast!! I wonder how many tons I am going to have to sort through to find just one of those top coins?? Maybe I better search eBay instead! Ha

Numis Pam... you can pretty easily find one to upgrade from one of your cleaned coins... it might take quite a while to find one of the last 13 holes.
Oh, and welcome to the quest!

I found most of them, in change and rolls. The 1911-s,1913-s,1909s,and 1924-d, were purchased recently. The 1931-s XF, was purchased for $5 or less about 10 years ago. The Bu cents from 1934 to 1958 were 1/2 purchased. and 1/2 found in rolls. I did find the 1912-s in a roll I purchased for 2.50.

Ut oh, just picked up a 1911-s and 1914-d down to the big boy now, 1909-s vdb. Some of yall really got me thinking about the 1922 no D. Maybe I'll just buy a really cheap 1922-d and take the d off myself. Pretty much the same thing eh? lol.

I have a 22 weak D as my "no" D. I figure that as people would not want to pay up for the the "no" D, then perhaps there would be value to having a weak D

Yeah, I heard he made bullseye targets by supergluing BU Lincolns centered over BU CC Morgans

Odd question in the original post. Possibly should have been who doesn't collect Wheat Cents? I suspect that possibly many millions of kids all collect them and there is a lot of kids you know. I agree most probably start with the recent Cents but then they graduate to the Wheat Backs. This is just one of the problems with collecting any coin of low mintages. Think of this. There is well over 300,000,000 people in the USA now. Imagine the percent that save Cents. Now thow in millions and millions of people in other Countries that too want to collect them. You could end up with possibly 20, 30 or more Millions of people that want to collect WheatCents.
Now with that in mind look up some of the mintage numbers of WheatCents. For example the 14D with 1,193,000 minted and think of your chances of acquiring one. Worse yet the famous 09S VDB with 484,000 minted. Just look at all the ones with less than 10 million minted and think of your chances of finding one.
My suggestion is if you do find any of those with low mintages, grab them fast but watch for fakes. That 09S VDB is one of the largest counterfeited coins on Earth.
As for me, I'm on set #10 and all completed. All in Whitman Classic Albums and each in a Zip Lock plastic bag.

Carl
