Derrick: Please allow me to add my suggestion to the above hording rules. It has come to my attention there are 8 or 9 verities of the 1982 penny. Without a lot of detail it's large date (LD), small date (SD) each of the following; CU, ZN, Philly (P), & Denver (D). Also proof. Apparently, no one has found a SD, CU, D hence, 8 verities. Given the short shelf life of the Zinc '82 penny (many problems with bubbling, oxidation, etc.) it is estimated only 20% of the original ones are still in circulation.

If the numbers I obtained from "Coin Talk" which reference You must be logged in to see this link. are correct (a lot of if here,) we can estimate the current Zinc verities percentages of ALL minted in '82 still in circulation as follows: LD P=3.58%; SD P=0.72%; LD D=3.28%; and SD D=2.62% or a total of 10.2% 1982 Zinc still in circulation. I had heard there were less ZN coined than CU but the numbers above have it closer to 50/50. Regardless, given the very small numbers of the small date philly estimated still in circulation (less than 1% of the total minted for '82) and given the several verities of the year, I think ALL of the 1982's should be keepers. Putting sets together of the verities could prove very profitable considering higher grades.

Quite a bit than my 2 Cents worth here. Comments/thoughts requested.

Wow, this place is crazy full of hoarder types (I'm new here, and don't collect pennies or nickels). I'm more in the PM camp and forgive the naivete that follows but.......what is going on here with these hoarders of pennies(copper & zinc)and various constructs of base metal hoarding. Wasn't there a law passed in the USA making it illegal to melt down coinage? Are you planning on doing it anyway? How do you realize gains in this world? (is it old pennies you sell to coin shops). I must say I'm both taken aback and curious to what makes the majority here TICK?

Cheers

I am as most of us into other PM's ie. Silver. When you can get a copper penny for 1 cent and its real metal worth is 2.3 cents then why not keep it. Same issue as in 65, 66, 67, etc with Half Dollars some horded them some did not. Now would be a good time to have them for their 40% silver contnet. If the copper penny thing does not pan out you are out nothing. if it does you have made 2 to 3 times or more on your money.

AgShaman and Silverguy23.. Welcome to the forum. I would have guessed from your names that you are proponents of the "white metal." I am a big silver bull myself.. as are many of the copper hoarders here. While it is currently illegal to melt the pennies.. that does not keep them from being traded in their original form at a premium.. much as $1000 bags of 90% silver are traded now. When there was a melt ban on silver coins back in 1968 did that keep folks from hoarding them and selling them at a profit? When they lifted the melt ban in 1969 did everyone melt all their 90% silver down so they could sell it? Many of us here have converted significant amounts of copper pennies obtained at face into improving our stacks of silver.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

Hi,
I read about this forum in the latest Lost Treasure Magazine. I have been keeping copper cents for some time and wonder where do you sell the ones you have. Who are the buyers for these copper cents?

Some of the buyers are us on this board who don't have or want to take the time to sort ourselves.

I too am a hoarder of copper as well as silver, why? Because I like it.

Ah Yes! the elusive 1909 S VDB, I've been searching for this rascal for the last 50 years.
Still haven't found one.

This information is extremely educational. My Grandfather was a collector of coins and I have a lot of pennies that he collected but have not had the opportunity to review. This guideline will help me tremendously as I begin to go through his inventory. Thanks again for this information. I am grateful that the posting, although back in 2008, was not removed so that the newbees can also benefit from it.

Thanks again.

While I'm sure the 1943 copper penny is quite rare, I would also say the 1943 steel is rare too. In all my years of coin collecting I've found 4 silver quarters, 3 Indian head pennies, and 2 Buffalo Nickels. Never have I found a steel penny.
