I found a 1944 nickel without a mint mark. Does this seem possible? Has anybody else ran across anything like this?

Maybe it's a Henning nickel, they are pretty collectable!

"When caught, Henning was sentenced to 3 years in jail, and had to pay a $5,000 fine."
"This just in... apparently he paid the fine with nickels. Authorities didn't see any reason why they shouldn't accept them, so the chief of police hired his daughter to roll them all up and haul them to the local bank. Case closed."
Just kidding.

It would be like faking the one dollar coins today, but with half the metal.

None come up on ebay listings. Are they collectible? I would think they should fetch a premium, like the racketeer nickels of 1883.

Because they are counterfeits, they would not be permitted on eBay. I have seen them get around $30.00 in the past.

I read somewhere that when he was busted they found a bunch of his nickel blank planchets and the mint used them.

I'm sure there are LOTS of myths and rumours about his exploits.

in the 1850's I could believe the mint use 'good blank planchets',

but I can't believe that they would have used them in the 1950's, post WWII patriotism and all.
