Don't you just love it when you open up a fresh box of halves and your experienced eye picks out one on one of the top end rolls that has the color of a 40%er? So the first roll had a 40%er.. the third roll had a 90% Kennedy. I was starting to have dillusions of hitting for the cycle. Like that's gonna happen. Well I got enough solid silver bands.. but they all had the wrong pic on them.. no Franklins or Walkers.
So from this $500 box of BWR Halves I got:
3 90% Silver Kennedies - 1964-D
3 40% Silver Kennedies - 1966, 1967, 1968-D
1 2007-D
1 2006-P.. the official Real Cent Half. It had the letters R C punched into it.. The Holy Grail!
27 Rolls CWR Quarters
Skunk - short 96 cents.. had 4 pennies instead of quarters
3 rolls CWR dimes
1 Silver Roosie - 1964-D
3 rolls CWR nickels
1 Silver WN - 1945-S  |

SILVER Halves
1964 and before - 90%

1976... "Both proofs and circulation strikes can be 40% SILVERS and can be Clads" Okay, how do you tell them apart? Is it the "s" mint mark? I have $107.00 of 1976D & $23.00 of 1976. Some look a little silverish, but I need to know for sure. I am now too tone deaf to listen for the silver "chink".
Edit: Okay, I looked it up on Red Book. RB says the "S" mint mark can be 40% SILVER or clad. So, I am looking for "S" mint marks only on 1976 SILVER, right? I still need a reliable method to tell 40%'ers from clad on 1976S.
Help me out, Country.
Correct - Only the 1976-S halves CAN be 40%ers. 
I have found a few 40%er 1976-S circulation strikes, but no proofs myself. So, they are scarce, but you can find them.
You can use the ring test to discriminate, but you can also tell them apart by looking at the SILVER patina. Look at the SILVER gloss surface field of a typical 40%er and compare that with the grey metallic shine of a clad; they are quite different. |

2010 dimes are common now that the mint has made 262 million - 2010-D dimes and 324 million - 2010-P dimes as of July. Last year the mint only produced 49.5 million - 2009-D dimes and 96.5 million 2009-P dimes; these are the ones to save.
