For those who don't know, there are several banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland that are either grandfathered in to the Bank of England system or are somehow or another allowed to issue their own banknotes backed by British Pounds. They are fairly rare comapred to regular Pound notes and thus collectible. They are legal for use anywhere in the UK, but generally they are only accepted in Scotland, border towns, and banks (since many English/Welsh aren't familiar with them).

| There was a major bank robbery (mentioned in the N. Ireland banknote article) where 26.5 million pounds in Northern Bank notes were stolen. Since the bank that was robbed was the issuing body, they were able to respond by changing their designs drastically, making the stolen notes very difficult to spend. |

One pound notes are legal tender in Scotland I thought. Maybe just one pound coins.
Scottish notes can legally be used anywhere in the UK, but they are not legal tender. |

The concept of 'legal tender' does NOT exist in Scots law,as Scots law is a civil law system,as opposed to the common law system that is used in England.

| One pound coins are definitely legal tender in Scotland. One, two, and five pound coins are legal tender everywhere in United Kingdom to any amount. |
