OK--so after reading so many posts, I finally figured it was time to try and get a $25 box of pennies...went to a local credit union (where I do not have an account) and asked for a $25 box...teller said $25 in pennies? I said yes--what ever a box is...she said they don't order so don't have boxes...do I have anything to carry them in? I'm thinking, crap--of course not--I thought they came in boxes--I'm already screwing this up. She offered a plastic bag I said OK.
She got the pennies and started peeling off address labels from some of them--now I'm thinking that this is what you guys like to see, so maybe I'm doing OK. She did ask if I had an account, said no, just looking for old pennies...
anyway, getting ready to look through them...will let you know how it goes.

Welcome aboard. I started by sorting halves. I made the same mistake that you did. Nothing to carry them in. After a month or so I checked in with my brother in Georgia. He had gotten the tellers to give him several canvas bank bags and several zipper bags. I didn't have any. I figured out that if you looked stupid enough when they asked what you were going to carry them in, they eventually came up with a zipepr bag, or a canvas bag. Now I have plenty of both at no cost to me.

Good luck

I have checked several credit unions. The ones I frequent don't order change. I was told it costs them to order change and they squeeze every cost they can. You might try your luck in obtaining the canvas bags as they are extremely convenient. Try a few local banks and ask for just enough pennies that you can't easily carry them out in your hands. Some new cashier may give you one. Credit unions are a great source for customer wrapped rolls and they usually have a large amount of pennies on hand. I have noticed recently that many of my penny sources are using plastic bags because of the cost of canvas. Sometimes local coin shops may sell you canvas bags cheap. I used to pay about $1.00 each for them. Good luck.

Bank of America gave me a canvas bag for halfs. Some of my credit unions will not use boxes - they use heavy plastic bags. Other banks prefer the boxes.

The easiest to deal with for me are a few fabric grocery bags with handles. You can stuff one in your pocket and they only cost about a buck most places now. Sit in the car and shuck pennies directly into the bag if you like while someone else drives.

Why do you need a driver?

Safer than sorting and driving at the same time....

Deal

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

Steady looking for the elusive Indian head....

I've sorted halfs while driving but shucking pennies is another thing all together.
