I know that this has been discussed before in past, but I'm wondering if anyone has found a better way to open those darn plastic shrink wrapped rolls. My thumbs are killin' me from peeling them open. I've tried cutting them with a knife, but found out that it could be dangerous to the fingers. I'm only processing around $500 a week and wonder how the big timers (by the ton'ers) are doing it while processing that every 2 days.

When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband. |

| The fastest way I've found is to bend the roll in the middle so that the pennies on the end of the roll start to fall out at an angle, then I squeeze the other end of the roll like a tube of toothpaste. I get through a brick in about five minutes doing it like this. |

| i take a shop knife with the blade clicked out to the smallest setting (maybe 1/4"), then gently slice them open lengthwise. i start at one side, resting the blade on the last or second-to-last penny, then slide it down, and cut through the plastic at the nearest end. Then pull the plastic apart from the near side. As always, use a sharp knife with a little force, not a dull knife with a lot of force :) |

| I slice the rolls lengthwise just enough to score the plastic but not damage the coin. I score the top 10 rolls in the box, then I place the next set of rolls in a tray I made from the bottom of a box. I had to tape the box up because it won't hold together after you cut the box down. The box is about 1/2 - 3/4 inch high. It fits 10 rolls and they don't move when you slice the rolls. It works great. |

I do that too, good idea but fingers slice open too. Ask me about it sometime.
I just don't like it when I toss them in my trash box and they bounce back out. (static electric) or stick to my hand like a magnet. |

| I line them up at the edge of a table and use a utility knife to cut the end of the plastic. A single cut up to the first coin. That makes it a lot easier to bend the roll. Once you get it to bend the coins will fall out fairly easily. |

Most of the pennies I get are in Brinks rolls. So I tried different methods of opening them. I used to snip a little slice in the end with scissors like SaulMine to start them. Then I started tearing the end a little manually before squeezing. Nickelless has the right idea. Now I just bend and milk. I bend them with my thumb near the top instead of the middle. Once they are at an angle they start coming out real easy. My shucking rate is about the same as Nickelless.. 5 minutes a box. I drop them directly in a hopper and drop the plastic wrapper into a white bucket next to the hopper. It is then very easy to glance into the bucket when you are done and see if maybe you were going too fast and a penny hung up in one of the wrappers.. you will see a dark spot. I think there are pictures on some of the penny boxes that give you a few hints on how to do it. Maybe I just have strong thumbs.. LOL Actually, it shouldn't require much thumb pressure if you do it right.  |

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks. |

I open mine by hand. My hands got sore at first, but they are stronger now. Other methods are fine, but if you can avoid having to use a tool I would bet after some pracitce that your opening will eventually be faster. I open paper rolls slightly slower because of having to use a tool.
Maybe we should post times on opening rolls so we can see what method is the fastest? I am always ready to learn a new approach if it shaves a few seconds of my penny sorting time.  |
