I found a 1971-D BU 3.28 g This is 5.5% heavier than a normal copper penny. (Normal weight is 3.11 g). I weighed it because it went into the copper reject side when sorting thru my Ryedale twice. I have weighed a lot of pennies but never found any close to this weight. The heaviest I've ever found before this was 3.15 g.

Cu Reject Pile? How have you set up your machine? I know some sort Cu accept while others sort Zinc accept and keep all the "rejects". That is my plan - sort out all the steel to free up space and cash, deal with a concentrate later to seperate CDN/US Cu, various weights of Cdn pennies, Cdn Zincs to set aside, Wheats and Indians. Ok I doubt I'll find an Indian, unless it escaped those American (and Texas) Cowboys by fleeing to Canada.

Must be a mint error of some kind, I'd investigate seriously. Could be worth $$. check out this site http://www.minterrornews.com/

Actually legacypac, there is historical evidence of just what you suggested. Chief Joseph was one of many Native Americans that led his people north to Canada to escape.

Neat find Tourney. I agree with fb101.. seems to be a thick planchet error.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Yes this is why I mention it. Another famous indian who fled to Canada was Sitting Bull - who fought at Battle of the Little Big Horn aka Custer's Last Stand. Info and a nice video (shown on Canadian TV) here: http://www.histori.ca/minutes/minute.do?id=10174
