I went to the bank today and picked up some nickels, dollar coins and halfs. Out of 11 halfs, two were 40% silver. Not to bad, I like silver at face value!

| I LOVE silver at face value - I scrounge through halves from time to time as well. I once asked for 6 bucks in halves at a Commerce and sure enough, one of the 12 was a 40%er |

Hi ya'll,
First post and lurker for several months now. I've collected coins since '58 and.... I still bend over to pick up the best of the them.....the once cent piece.
I thought this thread would be a good time to make my first post. I like silver as much as gold or copper and I get a huge kick when I find some either 'banking', buying or metal detecting. But picking up cheap silver in my area is getting harder and harder. Six months ago, a teller at my long time bank told me that they watch very closely ALL coins that come into the bank very closely. That included 40%. Oh well....Guess I'll keep sorting pennies and metal detecting.
Excellent forum! Glad to start making your acquaintances!

Welcome Red Leg. Switch banks! |

Red_Leg, welcome. Glad you decided to start posting. Post well and post often.

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks. |

| Welcome. It seems that much of the silver I get at banks was just brought in. These two had just come in at the drive through. I guess I asked at the right time. |

| I'd say always ask for 1/2s. You can spend the ones you don't like. I just got $6 bucks of 1/2s on a driveby in Seattle - 1 was a 40%er. Worth the quick stop. |

Thanks for the welcomes fellas.
This particular bank I've done business with for quite a long time. And up until several years ago I would occasionally find silver in quarter rolls that I would get from them. Most of the time the coins were in pretty good shape and and they were almost always dated either '57 or '64. Those have dried up too. One of my sons banks 20 miles from where I live. I'll get him to start picking me up quarters and halves. I metal detect the playground area(wood chips)at the school in town and at least once a year come up with several nice silver dimes and/or quarters. Where do these kids come up with the silver? Parents collections? |

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Always glad to hear from someone new. As to Silver at a bank. This is a great time to hit banks for change. With the economy doing rather poorly lately, many people that have that old jar, can, box, etc. of coins laying around are now taking them to banks. Imagine someone that has such a jar of coins for about 20 years now and then dumping it into a bank. If you can get piles of change from a bank, good timing. |
