I was about to drop a few packages in the mail containing coins that various people have bought from me (including Misteroman--thanks, Derek) but got to wondering, should I ship by USPS Insured Mail and have to declare the contents (90% silver dimes), USPS Delivery Confirmation and require a signature but not divulge the contents, or UPS?

I'd ship them ups/fedex. With fedex you get $100 worth of insurance free! And you dont have to declare what they are.

I have a hard time resisting the temptation to take a wheat penny out of the take a penny cup when I see one!

Just use USPS priority mail. Its relatively cheap, quick, and I don't think you have to declare what you're shipping even to buy insurance.

I ended up using USPS Delivery Confirmation. That's how payment was sent to me via money order for the largest purchases, and since none of these packages was over 2 lbs., and since a signature was required every step of the way, I figured that would be the safest way to go.

EDIT: I had to send Priority anyway because each of the packages was heavier than 13 ounces. That's something I was not aware of with regard to shipping since I'm still a newbie with this sort of thing.

It's better if you print postage on the internet. I just hand over the package and no questions asked. Also the shipping is discounted and the delivery confirmation is free. $9.30 on $50 pennies total. I'm still hesitant about the insurance though because there's no way they'll pay off on it.

That's due to Homeland security.

I think you're not supposed to insure shipments of money. If you try to insure a heavy package the clerk gets suspicious about how it was packed and what it is. Delivery Confirmation gets you a tracking number which is about all insurance gets you, so DC is the way to do it.

A penny sorted is a penny earned!

Priority is the best way I've found, including international.

The main thing to understand is that there are two primary mail streams. Regular mail, including first class and parcel post etc... and Express Mail, which includes Priority! So priority mail travels with the express... but simply does not receive the anal attention to timely connections that express gets.

And as has been discussed before... the flat rate envelopes can be loaded up heavily by using a cardboard insert and taping it to the inside of the mailer.
