Today I tried to cash a chase cashiers check at my local chase branch. The teller told me it would be $5 to cash it since I'm not a chase account holder. $5!!! to cash a cashiers check!!! So if it costs $6 to get one, and it costs $5 to cash it. Chase made $11 in fees on setting aside $50.

Chase was going to be the next bank I opened an account at too. I'll just scratch them off my list.

I forgot to mention, I was extremely nice the whole time. I just said "no thanks, I'll take my check back." I did this because I was headed to another bank to pickup my weekly order.

maybe I could hire a kid to walk in by him/herself with a 100 $1 coins/bills and say he/she really needs a single $100 bill.

Such fees are common these days at most banks. The check may be from their bank but unless you have an account there too it cost you up to $10.00 to cash it...........and they take your thumb print too while they are at it.

It is actions such as these by some banks that cause many to resign themselves to remain "unbanked" (having no account with any bank.)
A smart owner of a check cashing agency could use Chase as an example of how a banks don't care about their customers.

(Who will the bank blame when they Chase away their customers?)

Wouldn't it be more fun to say.. "OK I would like to open an account." Then you cash the check. Then you say "OK, I would like to close my account.. I decided I really don't like banking here"

I should try it at another chase branch! I still have the check, I've been to 2 different banks that would cash it for me for free, no questions asked since, and I still havent done it.

Is chase open on Saturday?

Pretty sure they are open on Saturday. If they give you the same treatment, open the account, cash the check, close the account. It would be a great story to tell here.

manager: "do you want a debit card?"
Me: "sure, why not?"
manager: "do you want to order checks?"
Me: "are they free? If so, yes"
manager: "Ok, Sir, you are all setup."
Me: "Can I cash my cashier's check now?"
Manager: "here's your money"
Me:"I'd like to close my account, that teller is giving me the evil eye! She is a (*insert racist, sexist, anything else here)"
Manager: "that will be $10 to close the account"
Me:"Dont make me call the NAAWP"
Manager:"Here is the $50 you opened your account with"

I don't know about your state, but in AZ the state law specifies exactly what is required to cash a check. Paying a fee and getting fingerprinted are not among the requirements. If you didn't mind the inconvenience you could file charges for a violation of that law. But it's probably less inconvenient to take the check back where you got it and demand a bounced check charge of $50 or so. You'll get it, too. And if the writer of the check is knowledgeable, he will sue his bank for breach of contract.

A penny sorted is a penny earned!

what ever happened to banks offering toasters to entice people to open new accounts. Even at one point banks were offering $50 to open an account and keep it for 6 months. Now none of the local banks are offering any thing.

It is a timing thing. I just got an offer from a new local bank to give me $75 to open an account. I was probably going to open one there anyway, just to get more penny action.. but this is sweeeeeeeet! That is 3 free boxes of pennies!

I can send you a referal card for Bank of America. If you open an account there we each get $25!

there arent any Bank of America's around me otherwise I'd do that.

Sawmill, its a chase "cashier's check". The kind that chase pulls the money out of the issuers account when they buy the check.

I got a "Milk Shake Mixer" for opening a account.

A Toaster is so cliche'.

FRN's are better though.(convertibility to real money)

Screw; JP MORGAN - CHASE BANK the bastard is dead and is still draining our pockets at every chance.

That $5 is probably going to help them pay for another accusation like Bear Stearns.
( their still laughing about how they pulled that one over on us)

I agree with Saul Mine,at least that would get the attention of the persons writing bank policy.

Hey Moboman, I got them for you on Friday. Paid a sizable credit card bill in halves, nickels and pennies. It was so much change that I had to make two trips into the bank. It was a nice dump for me that got my wife off my back also.
