Are you guys storing your collections in safes? If so which safe would you recommend? I've read that if you invest in metals 1% should go into security. So $10,000 @ 1% = $100.00 into a safe, would you do this or would you increase the percentage amount?

| I don't think I would ever spend too much money on a safe. I think there are cheaper and better places to store your things. If I can remember there are some good threads on where to store things. I will probably buy a cheap safe someday, but just as a decoy. |

| Mine are in the garage in a coffee can, no one would look there and they are not worth anything anyways, they are pennies. |

| I'm talking about storing your Silver and Gold! I've looked at this website http://www.ftknox.com/ but it looks to expensive! Any of you guys have any opinions on which safe are really good and recommend at a affordable price? I don't want to store my Silver or Gold at a bank so do not suggest that please! Pennies, I'm not to worry about storing them just yet. I do like CUKNUCK idea though putting them in coffee cans... |

I have a honeywell $50 1/2hr fire rated box that I store my PM's and FRN's in. I used to store them in my gunsafe but then there wasnt enough room for guns!
I'm planning on hiding my pm's around my house and only keeping a little in the safe, that way when someone breaks in, and they have a gun to my head, I give them whats in the safe. OR of they steal it.
As for copper pennies. Mine are hidden, not in a safe. |
I have a hard time resisting the temptation to take a wheat penny out of the take a penny cup when I see one! |

Hector6man, your best bet is probably to have your gold and silver buried deep under dozens of bags of pennies. After the first few bags of $50 worth of pennies, no burglar in his right mind is going to keep digging to get to the real treasure that he probably won't expect to find.
There was a thread somewhere on here about how to think like a burglar when knowing where NOT to hide stuff. Does anyone remember where that was? |

I can't hide my copper pennies. If someone wants to haul that many off that is probably somebody I don't want to mess with. |

I sleep with mune under my pillow. I would pick the place that would be not very obvious. A safe IMHO is not a good idea. |

I think the key is not only security of your PMs but also their invisibility. I think a huge gun safe or other obvious such device is just inviting thieves to target them. Better to have a dummy safe that's either weighted down with zinc pennies that the thief can take and then keep your REAL stash hidden securely somewhere that they'd never think to look. |

My son thought of this: Put loose gold coins in PlayDough and then store containers in kids' rooms in plain sight. Sometimes the obvious is the best. I also like those fake Ajax containers and hollowed out books. |

I heard a story once from when the germans were comin into a city and there were 2 nobel prize winning scientists that were there at the time. They didnt want their Nobel Medals to be confiscated so they dissolved em in aqua regia and put them on a shelf with probably a hundred other bottles of various lab solutions. Nobody recognised it for what it was.
After the invasion the scientists dropped the gold from the acid and had them recast by the folks that gave them to em in the first place, after explaining what happened. Sometimes the best place to hide something is in plain site.
If you were REALLY paranoid I guess you could plate your junk gold and silver copper!
A good safe is never a bad idea, if they can't easily remove it, just stop em or slow em down, and have a LOUD audio alert. |

| LOL I would love to see a thief try and steel my safe.Seeing as it 800lbs empty and at least a few hundred pounds of goodies in it and growing daily.I figure full it will weigh close to a ton and where it is presents no easy way to get it out.(much less get it in when it was empty).I know anything is possible but still very improbable |

| Just leave your coins in buckets in the frezer. An old dead frezer even saves on the electric bill. |

| Thanks for all your opinions! I'm not to worry about thieves, because when you purchase Silver and Gold its a private transaction. My biggest fear is the government! The new Patriot Act, these guys can come into your home and ceases anything and everything. It's almost like we live in Germany. I don't trust these guys at all. How do you hide your Money(Gold and Silver), not currencies(Dollars), but Money from the government? |

| Lol, I need that trusty 45! Tourney64 why do you store your valuables in a safe? What if another incident happen to the U.S. like 9/11 how do you plan to go to the bank and withdrawal what's in your Safe Deposit Box? Or what if the stock market crashes and the banks shut down, how do you plan on going into the bank to get your valuables? When 9/11 happened all banks where closed, but your precious metal dealer where the only banks at that time that where open. |
