Wisconsin had about 100" of snow this season. The whole freeze/thaw thing was not only really annoying, but has severely damaged our streets, highways and interstate roadways.
I've never seen so many deep potholes in the road surface. Some can be measured in inches (6-10" at a glance) and many so deep that you can clearly see the rebar that was set into bridge surfaces, etc.
The only people who must be smiling are those who own the front end alignment shops.
The weather has finally started to warm up, but patching crews are scarce due to the high price of blacktop. Gomer and Goober were out in my neighborhood patching holes this afternoon. Once they figured out which end of the shovel to use, they just threw some loose patch in some of the bigger holes and left the piles for the cars to compress as they drove over it.
While I've never been to Albania or North Korea, I can't imagine their road surfaces being much worse than those here in Wisconsin. With just about the highest gas tax in the US, our streets should be better than those that have been used for practice bombing runs.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply. |

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks. |

| You typically don't make the permanent patches until the weather stabilizes has well as the road surfaces - freeze/thaw as you said. If they don't make the real patches in the summer then you have a complaint. Lived up north long? |
The difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that the pessimist is better informed. |

| What's this freeze thing you mention? We don't see much of that here. However, we still seem to have our share of holes in the road. |
Are you throwing that out? |

| The main thing is to miss running into them. I find it amazing how many just drive right into the biggest hole in the street and then wonder why they have problems with thier cars. We have pot holes, RR tracks, sewers sticking up, junk in the streets, cracks and just about anything possible in our streets. And now with the end of Winter, the streets are even worse. So just drive carefully. I do. |

I think oxen and donkeys don't care about potholes. |
