If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I searched my $50.00 worth of rolled nickels yesterday and I found:

1 - 1939 (not in great shape but a senior citizen should be allowed to retire)

1 - 1944P (it was a long dry spell to find this one)

Last night's sort was OK. I found a 1942 S war nickel in the first dozen rolls checked, and it was in pretty good shape. The usual amount of 1940's era and some 1950's nickels were found, including a 1939. The theme for last night's search was why I can not recently find any AU condition 1964 nickels. They minted a billion of them. I finally found one last night that stood out with much better features than any 1964 I have sorted lately. And a good 8% or so of nickels in my rolls are 1964 dates. You'd expect to find some high quality 1964 nickels every now and then.

Welcome jin.coy. That is just over 2 boxes sorted and your Ni percentages are similar to mine here in BC. Are you seeing zero Ni and CuNi in the CDI rolls like I am?

Welcome jin.coy. Another north of the border hoarder. Post well and post often.

Deal

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

Ok-same in BC. After checking a bunch now I just dump them as soon as I see them. It is the Royal Canadian Mint Alloy Recovery Program you are experiancing.

Hi everyone. I have a question about nickel sorting. I bought a $100 bank box last Saturday, found 2 1945, a 1936d buffalo w/ the date still readable, and a Canadian '85. I only kept the Canadian and the '36 buffalo. All other coins were returned to the bank. Was this a mistake? Should I have kept all pre 1965 coins? I was under the impression that only pre '65 quarters, dimes and half dollars contained silver. Can someone post which years for nickels (both US and Canadian) should be saved, and which should be returned to the bank? Thanks.

Yesterday I did not found any war nickels (odd) out of $200, but I did find 2 buffalos (one with a hole), 2 Can. nickels, and 1 1906 barber nickel.

The 1945 may have been silver. On your next nickel sort, any 1942 to 1945 nickels with a big letter mint mark over the capitol dome on the back is a nickel with silver content. Check www.coinflation.com for info on silver value per a coin.

I have done nickel sorts in the past and thought I'd break up the penny monotony with a sort of some jeffersons.
$40.00 sort of cwr mwr and prinks plastic yields:
US-10
1939
1941S
1943P SILVER!
2-1951S/1951
1957
1959
3- 1960

I also found 5 from San Fran. I looked them up and their mintages are the lowest of the 3. Do you guys keep these? They seem more prevalent than the S pennies.
Sadly no Can. and not that I expected it but no buffalo either.

One 1942S in today's sort.

ok, a two day newbie.
last night sorted $100, into these catagories. pre war-- 5, 46-63--46, 65-70---25. with two newer canadians, a 20 franc swiss, and a BUFFALO , that was in the very first roll.

today , i did $66 in the morning. pre 42--3, 46/63--27, 65/70--17 nothing odd.

this evening i did another $100 pre 42--5, 46/63-29. 65/70--29. and mid way through, a funny color'd nickle, ayup , my first 1945.

i have another $100 to do, and then might just call it off. somehow this does not 'excite' me as much as, pulling cu pennies.

one of the troubles with joining a new 'club' . i read for hours yesterday. someone was saving the westward-- i pulled them . and the new ones too. if anyone wants them.

Ten rolls Canadian nickels

142(!) Ni (35.5%). Crazy. Almost all the rest were CuNi. Only 14 steel. Must have been another coffee can collection. Don't know where it came from--I bought it three months ago just before heading off to Africa, and didn't write down which bank. Too late to go back anyway.

Ten rolls Canadian nickels

80 Ni (20%). Another old batch. Went to two banks today, had a choice between fresh mint and CDI.

$100 NF String box.... 2 Canadian '88, '94; 1 war nickel '45d; 10 "s" mint '46, '48, '68, '69(x3), '70(x4). Oldest coin was a '39, and there were 90 westward journey nickels in the box. No Buffalos this time though

6 Brinks boxes, I found;

2 buffalos.
4 war nicks.
A bright shiny '74D penny.
A very worn '35 5 Centavo from somewhere. The country name is worn off.
Lots O' Canadian nickels, all of them post '81.
