I was at a gas station and took a copper penny that I was eyeballin'.Now I had to take it as it was a wheat or some rare find, examining it, etc. I was hoping to trade it for a penny I was going to get back in change because my gas total was odd, but my drink I was buying too made it a perfect amount with no pennies. So I took it and left.
The cashier took note of this and took the whole Take-a-penny dish and put it behind the counter as to teach me lesson. Its back and the cashier doesn't work there,but it still haunts me.
Thats why I dont touch those things anymore! |

I told my buddies theres no worry for a run on the banks. Joe Sixpack too lazy and *may* have a walk on the banks. |

I got a '96 S nickel in change from Boston Market today. It has the cameo finish. Was somebody that desperate they broke open a proof set for change..? Unfortunately it is showing some wear.

| I got a 1964 dime in change today, and yesterday, I got a half dollar back in change! It was only cupronickel, but I was astonished. I can't remember the last time I received a half in change. |

I once got chewed out by a gas station attendant for taking a wheat penny from the Take-a-Penny dish. |

I've been putting day's end pocketsfull of change in jars for years. I'll search them one day. Did notice the euro I got for a quarter at the DQ. I'll do that all day.  |

As with everything in my life, there is a story first. I hate Taco Bell. I hate going through the "car corralls", (drive thru, drive through, whatever). But tonight, after the first late night at work in a while, I did both. I'm glad I did. A first happened to me. I got a Buffalo* nickel back as change! No date of course, but it is nice none the less.

baking soda to clean up junk silver? How does that work? I've been wanting to clean up my junk silver since it has no collector value and I like shiny stuff. |

| There's a trick to cleaning silver. All dips and silver polishes actually remove tiny amounts of silver. This is OK for well worn coins and you can use baking soda to rub the coin and restore the shine. I wouldn't want to try it on a decent coin where grade might be altered. I'll post the how to remove light silver tarnish without polishing in another thread. |

| Warm water and baking soda - make a paste and rub onto the coin for a minute or two - then rinse - done - shiny and new. Note: This is only for junk silver. This should not be done for any silver coin that has numismatic value above and beyond the junk silver value. |

Absolutely--once you clean a coin it is pretty much now gonna' be "junk" --some of the grading services will not certify a coin after it has been cleaned. Only clean a coin if you are certain it has no numismatic value (or if you want to eliminate it's numismatic value ). |

| I was at the bank the other day and saw in the coin rack a silver quarter by looking at the rim. I told the teller she needed to pull it out because it was worth more a quarter i.e. more like $3.30! The next day she still had it and said she really did not really collect coins and I was welcome to have it for a quarter! Another teller walked over and gave me a 1925 buffalo nickel for a nickel as well! It was an unbelievable day that day. Sometimes you just hit it right and it is nice when they are pulling stuff out and holding it for me all the time. |

| My wife dumped out 40 to 50 cents in change on an end table for me to take back to my dump bank the next time I returned zincs and my reject nickels. At first, I did not see anything interesting in this change with a quick glance. I later turned the lamp on the table on in order to inspect some old nickels from a recent sort to make sure I was not missing a War Nickel. Lo and behold, I thought to myself, "What is that interesting color coming off the reverse of the dime? I recognize that." Sure enough, I turn it over, and it is a 1964. It is a very dirty dime, and the edge is close to black. But the reverse, under light, was that wonderful color many of us can pick out from a mix of clad. Lucky me. If I had not turned the lamp on to look at some other coins, I would have missed this little piece of silver. Into the hoard it goes. |

Nice silver find. It all adds up. I know they are not "change" in the literal since, but over the past week I have found a 1963 $1 bill, (if it was a coin, it would be silver), and a $20 bill that is from the '60's as well I believe. The twenty came from a bank even. I'm seeing more and more older money coming out....
