Poll Question:
I am interested in seeing how many people are hoarding the zinc pennies, since they are nearly pure zinc, for a hedge against inflation or an investment.

Choices:

Yes, equal with copper
Yes, more than copper
Yes, but focusing on copper more
No,but not a bad idea
No, focusing on copper for now
No, that stuff is junk

I keep what I call "shiny zincs" (AU condition or better), especially the older ones. Since zincs wear pretty quickly well-conditioned examples may be in short supply some day. I only have about $30 worth. I can always throw them back if I really need the money.

Haha zinc as an investment? Maybe if you're a big player in the day trade. But you don't have enough room in your garage to make a buck

I too am keeping the older AU specimens. If the time comes where hoarding Zn becomes prudent, there will be plenty of them at the banks.

No - but they are not junk. Horgad had a great idea a few years ago......if our 95% Cu will only ever get us #2 copper scrap prices.....why not junk it down with zinc pennies to the limit of #2 grade.

Right now....turning zinc back into cash to hoard more copper.

not me. $1000 brass (copper/zinc) > $200 copper, $800 zinc.

When I first started sorting, I kept all the AU/BU Zincolns I ran across, but the pile was getting to big so I re-sorted the zincolns and only kept the best 50 coins from each year and mintmark. So now I have a perfect AU/BU set of Zincoln rolls from 83'-08'. Nowadays, I only keep any BU P-mint Zinc 82's I run across, and most if not all the D-mint 82's since I don't quite yet have a complete roll of 82' D-mint Zinc Small dates. The 1982 D-mint Zinc Large date is another very rare coin in my neck of the woods, and i've only found 9 of these in the 75K+ i've sorted so far, so I keep all of these no matter the condition.

To me it is not worth time time or money. You will never get to a ton of coppers if you save the zinc ones.

I love the wheat cents and those, as we know, are copper.

The two years that I am saving for the birth year coin project are zinc years.

So, there you go...my plan for enjoyment.

It's my understanding that zinc only really has scrap value in a fairly pure form. Being coated with a "stronger" metal makes it prohibitively difficult/expensive to extract from pennies. Numismatically, AFAIK every Zincoln was made in quantities of a Billion plus. I turn 'em in and buy more to sort. If i were to buy anything to diversify/hoard without sorting, it'd be nickels.

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

Couldn't you file of the copper and have pure zinc rounds though?

I wouldn't want to do that on a large scale though. We might end up junking down the price they're willing to pay for #2 grade copper.

I keep the AU/BU Zincolns. I think numismatics will continue to be a popular hobby and there will be few good specimens of these Zincolns due to the breakdown of the copper coating. I have placed a limit on myself of $300.00 worth of these though. That would be 12 Brinks boxes filled with loose coins. So far I have about 2 1/2. As far as stashing them for zinc value. Nah. I would rather store palladium. It takes up less room and has a brighter future. IMHO.

I thought the point of sorting coppers was to AVOID the ZINC?!?!

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

While I will admit to having a bigger zinc hoard than many here.. it is not kept as a zinc investment. The zinc hoard is made up of 2 parts.. the zincs I haven't returned to the bank yet, and the many boxes of BU shiny zincs that I actively market.

Look at it this way. Each of us only has so much capital to use for our penny hoard. Would you rather have that hoard of pennies be all zinc, or all copper? If any of it is zinc, then you can return that to the bank in exchange for a box that still contains 70-80% zinc and 20-30% copper. Isn't that a better mix than a 100% zinc box? You just keep repeating this process until your hoard is all copper. Of course you will always have plenty of zinc on hand since about 80% of your unsorted pennies will be zinc.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Let me see if I understand this? If you cross the North Korean border illegally, you get 12 years hard labor; the Iranian border illegally you are detained indefinitely. If you cross the US border illegally, you get a driver’s license, a social security card, welfare, food stamps, free health care!

But how about when they change the composition?

I see no reason to hoard circulated zinc right now. I do have a not of boxes of zinc, but they are BU boxes from different years. Right now the only way to make a profit on zincs is to sell BU boxes.

My hoard of circulated zincs is in the back of the van ready to go back to the bank so I can get more mixed bags/ boxes.

Actually, if you do find a box of BU ZINCS, you can get more for them then a box of copper.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK
