Got 8 rolls of halves today at one of my drive bys. Found 3 40% Halves in them! Much better than average.. 1 in the first roll and 2 in the last roll. Just the way I like to start and finish a half dollar sort.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

One box of halves searched today. Skunkage.

3 Rolls of halves.. skunked. It could have been worse.. I could have gotten more halves. These may have been 3 rolls I deposited a month ago. I gotta start keeping track of where I dump these things.

Picked up 3 rolls of halves today. Found 4 90%ers and 4 40%ers. Best luck I've had in a while.

Nice results fiatboy. I searched $86.50 today. Found one '67. I also keep the bicentennials. There was $9 worth of those.

Deal

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

Steady looking for the elusive Indian head....

In my area up to 50% of some rolls are bicentennials. Do they carry a premium to some collectors or do you just enjoy the look of the coin?

Don't give up. If you read back through this thread, you will see that many of us take regular skunkings on halves.

I got skunked on my last 8 boxes of halves. Not because I didn't find any, but because the bank hasn't ordered any for me in two weeks. I dropped 5 figures into a new account on the condition that they would order $2k each week for me. I better get my halves this week. I'm going through withdrawl.

got $100 from my penny dump bank (they are the cooles and think I am "just the cutest" (@ 20 yrs. old??))
anyway.....skunkage.
but I like the hunt and as stated before spending them is the most fun.
I went to a popular chicken eatery known for cows in their advertizing. I gave the lady a $1 FRN and $2 in kennedys. She said "do you have nine cents?" I didn't look at the total and said ah ok. I gave her my bank card as it was all I had. A few seconds later I was like,....wait. Looking at my reciept she only credited my $2.50 when I gave her $3. Long story short she was ignorant and the manager made up the difference.
I will keep spending them despite the trouble.

$200 in halves and got skunked. I need to get up north to my small town banks that have old rolls of halves sitting in the vaults. It seems that around the bigger cities where the turnover on halves is higher all the silver has been picked out.

$100 in halves
1-40% kennedy
keeping the hunt alive tomorrow at the same bank. They have given me $20 so far....let's see what is left.
I also need to try getting out into the country side and hitting rural banks and CUs that seems fun.

Another $200 in halves searched and was skunked again. The only interesting one was a 1979 half that seems to be gold plated. With gold at $850 is there enough in a plating to be worth anything? Any way to easily check to see if it is gold?

I believe there were some gold plated and counter stamped to commemorate his inauguration. I saw an article about it in another thread on a forum @ the treasure hunters web site.

$20 halves on wednesday skunked
$20 in CWR halves, 1 40% half. Not sure if they were CWR or bank rolled in paper. Seems odd that a sorter would leave a 40% in a roll.

Found four 40%ers today---out of $200 searched. Not great, but more silver than I had yesterday.

$20 in two CWRs yesterday. One 40%er. I think CWRs are the way to go if you can find them.

Good finds on the 87s. I have found Walkers, and even a commemorative, but never an 87.

i was eyeballing the coin tray at my bank this morning while waiting for the teller to get my pennies out of the vault, and i thought the Kennedy closest to me looked like a silver... Bought the $5 worth she had, and sure enough, that first one was a '68D :)

87's are tougher to come by than Walkers. I got lucky and found 61 in one box. I have no idea why there were so many in that box. I had a couple rolls from years past but they were one or two here and there, not in bunches.

I have found 6-1987's that I know of. When I was a newbe, I got three rolls of halves from one bank. No silver. I had $80 in my pocket, when I walked into the second bank. bought 8 rolls and every one was silver. Lost of franklins. They had one roll left. I went out to the car and got one of the three rolls that I had bought earlier and traded it in.

When I got home, I looked at the first two rolls and one of them had 4-87's. The other roll had some good clad coins in it, can't remember what. I would love to know what I traded in that last roll.

TXtim, great find on the 87's just like silver except that I woudld trade them for silver.
