I see mention from time to time about where people are getting their coins counted for free, as opposed to paying punitive bank or coinmaster fees. There always seems to be interest in locating free counting. I thought it would be nice to start a thread where people can register locations of banks and other institutions that offer free coin counting.
Here's my contribution:
AUSTIN, TEXAS
Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union
Austin locations have a comemins sorter in their lobbies that is there for public use. Members get to use the machine for free; anyone else may use it for a 5% fee.

BANK ATLANTIC
The majority of the BANK ATLANTIC branches offer 100% free coin counters in their lobby that are available for members as well as NON-MEMBERS during lobby hours.
Great idea for a thread topic, thanks for starting.

For anybody in the Indianapolis area, I just got this e-mail response today:
"Some FORUM branches have coin-counting machines. The fee is only 2% for members and 7% for non-members. There is no fee if the coins are deposited into a child's account.
Here is a listing of branches with coin-counting machines:

No problem. I used them yesterday for the first time. The best thing was that the counting machine was way faster than I expected. It ripped through 10k+ pennies just about as quick as you could put them in. It seemed alot faster than a Coinstar machine. The worse thing was the machine "only" holds 15k pennies. So I am going to be filling up the machine every time I go there. Which means waiting for somebody to empty it on a busy Saturday mornings. They are going to learn to hate me there real quick...oh well.
Also, they have a free coin counting day open to anybody. I saw it on their calendar. Maybe it is once a month? Unfortunatly, I didn't try to remember the date because it was a weekday and I knew that I couldn't make it there that day, but I am thinking it is next Tuesday or Wednesday... |

| As of June 1st, the fee at Forum Credit Unions for using there self-serve coin counter has been lowered from 2% to 0% for members. This might be branch specific, but I don't think so. |

Sounds like a bunch of lucky people. Around here in the Chicago area your lucky they don't take your house for turning in coins to a bank.  For real, LaSalle Bank people told me I could deposit coins into my account free until it totaled over $100. Then there is a fee of 10% of everything over that. Most Jewel Food stores areound here have machines that charge 7% for your coins. These are fees for your coins and not just to count them for you. If you went to a bank and asked them to just count your coins, you would probably end up in jail. Anyone know of a place around here cheaper?

| Century Banks have free coin counting, even without an account at the bank, at least in the Dallas area. I just discovered that today. I turned in so many pennies that they had to change out bags twice. :) |

| There are 3 Northwest Savings Banks in Erie PA that offer free coin counting to account holders. The machines even handle halves accurately. |

I heard from my penny contact at M & I Bank in Indianapolis that three of their branches have added self-serve coin machines on a trail basis and that more will follow suit if everything goes well. (Sorry I don't have the branch names/locations.)
So including the 5 or so Forum CU locations that should be at least 8 locations around Indianapolis. If you live in Indy, chances are at least one of them is near you. |

In my area free coin counting is no longer a option...the one bank that had it for account holders now charges account holders 2% and non account holders 8% (just like CoinStars in the area, some of which that are located in grocery stores won't charge you a thing if you take a gift card to a selected business or use the change to pay for groceries).
Rumor has it the charge for sorting is because the bank's machines (which are self-service) jam a lot and the service calls were getting too frequent & pricey.
I am now taking in sorted rolls of zinc and trading them in for unsorted rolls...so far so good :) |

-National Bank and Trust Co- in and around Dekalb, Illinois.

NO fee for members, 1% of total for non-members.
They bend over backwards to get me coins as well.

| yes... some hotties work there. The head teller, Kelly (I think), looks to be overwelmed sometimes, but generally she goes way out of her way to help me. I collected 50% of my hoard (1.5 million pennies) from this bank and I don't live in Dekalb. I have a resale shop nearby. Lately, I have been dumping whats left of my zinc at my main bank to pay mortgage, but have cashed literally tons of pennies at that Dekalb bank. I also love their Sycamore bank too wags. If you haven't already, give it a try. |

| Well, there is still nothing in Michigan around Grand Rapids that has free coin counting. I've been searching since the beginning of this year for something besides Coin Star. At least I'm plugging away with my Royal Sovereign for most of my zinc return. |
When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband. |

| TCF Bank has free coin counting for members. They are in Michigan however I do not know if they have any branches in Grand Rapids. |

Those coin counters also take Canadian Zn and CuNi with no problems.

| The coin counters at Northwest Savings Bank seem to be smart enough to reject steel canadian coins. It makes all kinds of funny noises, i thought I jammed it, then out pops a steel penny and it starts counting again. |
