I've enjoyed learning and interacting here so much that Ardent decided to put me to work. Thankfully this is such a great group there is almost nothing to administer. Like HCBTT said, we try to keep the place going.
For those who don't post much - I would encourage you to say something. Tell us what you are sorting and finding, what you like or don't like, anything. Joining in the conversation makes this forum more interesting for everyone including you.
Realcent paid to keep this place ad free up front.(I am curious if he remembers what he paid for - PM me). That seemed to last for about 3 years. Now a small group of very nice people have contributed to buy off the banner ads. If anyone feels they want to participate in that effort, PM me. I maintain a fund and an accounting of contributions in cash and Precious Metal. If we find we collected too much money, I think that excess contributions (like coins donated) could be used for contests here :) |

| One thing that interests me is to see what changes, if any, are being noticed around the country in terms of Cu percentages of sorted pennies. I've been sorting (in a semi-serious way) for about 3 or 4 years in D.C. and the change has been very slight. I don't save 82's, and it seems like it has gone from about 24% to around maybe 22% (with exceptions). As I have mentioned before, in W.Va. the percentages are higher, more like 28%. Does anyone else keep a close eye on any change in percentages? I ask in the banks, and I always get the same answer: I'm the only person that seems to be getting pennies for sorting- even if the tellers aren't quite sure what the heck I'm doing it for. Surely the numbers of people sorting is very low, even including the ones that don't log onto this website. When will things change dramatically, say 5% or 10% less per search? My percentages of wheats doesn't seem to change that much: about one-half of 1%. |

| I must also say thank you for this site. I was sorting coppers before I found this site but added meaning that I was not the only crazy doing this. |

This site is more than just a webpage. It's a community, a true forum of ideas and opinions, a meeting place, a discussion group. It's been said before, and I must agree to some extent, but it's because of such a small and unique group of individuals that this place exists as it is. If it were a larger more commercial endeavor, I'm afraid it would not be such.
Thank you Real Cent!
Oh, and since it hasn't come up before, has anyone ever considered www.realcent.com? It's shorter to type, plus you get more control and flexibility running your own site. |
As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

The Realcent site is the first forum I ever joined and I will state that it is the best.
What makes it the best is the members who post their finds, their ideas, their news and financial stories that may effect a few or all of us.
While we sometimes get into heated disagreements and say things we shouldn't (I'm guilty of doing that on this forum) most forum members manage to stay at Realcent realizing that the forum is too good to allow to deteriorate due to some whom we disagree with.
Had it not been for the Realcent forum I most likely would not bother to join in any forum anywhere on the net.
I still read Realcent postings though I don't post too much here (sometimes my posts won't take, maybe the mainframe at Forumco is mad at my desktop for some reason.) I am doing most of my postings on the sister site gold forum.com, it seems to allow my posts to go through with no trouble at all and it shortens the web addresses so I don’t have to use tinyurl.
Heres to you Realcent/Doug, the man who started it all! |

| Doug, thanks for starting this site, it's an invaluable asset for both beginner's and journeymen hoarders. I'd be willing to contribute for banner-free as well. |
Hoard now and hold on!

I am happy to give a little information in case anyone is interested in the history of the first days of this forum.
I started out as a numismatic coin collector while in high school. (I am currently 32 years old) I built up a modest to respectable collection of coins focusing on a few areas, mostly Standing Liberty Quarters, Franklin Half Dollars, modern commemoratives, and wheat cents, although I collected some nice examples of just about every US series. I was active in a numismatic discussion forum and followed a link posted there to a forum called http://www.goldismoney.info. I am sure most of you have been there.
That site educated me, or at least got me to educate myself on matters of precious metals, especially gold and silver. I never lost my appreciation for numismatic coins, but found a new respect for bullion, one that did, and still does, surpass my interest in collector coins. Periodically someone on that forum would bring up the idea of sorting pre-1982 cents for their copper content. It was generally met by the community with an attitude that while technically, it is true that pre-82 cents are worth more than a penny it is hardly worth the effort to sort them, copper is not a worthwhile metal in such small amounts, and those who choose to sort pre-82 cents are sort of soft in the head.
Obviously, I strongly disagreed and knew at least a few others did as well including Ardent Listener, a person for whom I have more respect than you can know. So I quickly typed up my feelings on the matter and posted them on a freebie website that can be found here: http://www.realcent.friendpages.com/ Some of the facts are wrong and the prose was intentionally over the top, but I can't change it because I lost the password a long time ago.
The page got linked by a few other sites and I started receiving requests for information about copper and precious metals in general. I thought there was enough interest to start a discussion forum on the topic and created this one. I didn't think it would ever have more than ten or twenty members tops.
Not very long after the forum started taking off I began to have to deal with some personal problems. I had, and have, my own demons and have found various degrees in success in fighting them. I talked to two members of this forum and practically begged them to take ownership and responsibility for the budding community because I could not do it. I saw the value this forum could provide, and didn't want it to die. Luckily, someone stepped up.
I am personally still very much in to sorting copper cents. Going through a box coin by coin is one of the most calming and meditative things I can think of.
I can't believe how far this community has come, and couldn't be more proud.
Yours,
realcent.
Thank you, realcent, for giving birth to this place! Truer words were never spoken...searching through coins one at a time...an inexpensive and healing hobby.
Take Care and please join in our fun from time to time with a post or two. Perhaps even join us at the Second Annual RealCent get together to be held in Orlando, Florida in January at the FUN Show. |
