I have often wondered how this place came to be and who its founding members were. Anyone want to give a little biography of this great place?

Am I a good person doing bad things? Or a bad person doing good things?

The site was started by a guy who used realcent as a handle here. Thus, the site name. Ardent will have to chime in, but I think he was here from very early on, as was Pencilvanian. Ardent, thank goodness, was added as an administrator before realcent simply just quit participating. I'm not sure any here even know realcent's identity. Accordingly, Ardent, the lone administrator at the time, was able to carry on with the site to the delight of penny hoarders everywhere. Thereafter, HoardCopper got added as an admin. Also, Andy Ryedale invented a nice penny sorter which helped many turbocharge their sorting efforts. Without the Ryedale machine, I wonder how many of us would still be slugging it out, hand sorting one box of dirty pennies at a time.

Excellent post by the way. I am going to watch this thread with interest.

Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

I agree with you TenBears about the Rydale. If I did not have that handy dandy little machine I would not be saving copper.

As far as I can tell "Realcent" started this forum on 05/01/2006 and last logged in on 02/26/2007. Andy I think has talked to him on the phone and might be able to give more details.

I have talked to "Realcent" on the phone. It's been so long now I hardly remember what all we discussed.
The prinicipal reason I wanted to contact him was regarding the forum's ownership.
This forum is sponsored by somebody to keep it "advertisement" free. Meaning somebodys paying 5 or 10 per month to keep banner ads from being on each page as we post. To this day nobody (who wants to talk) knows who is paying to keep it ad free.
Hopefully it does not go blip someday.
Thats about all I know.

This forum exists because of all of you great posters. A few of us help keep it running smoothly. Recently realcent's contribution to the ad free status must have run out. Volunteers stepped forward and we quickly returned to an ad free state.

The site has received media attention in the past. It is linked off of coinflation.com which drives a lot of our new members here. We are also top ranked on google for searches related to our subject matter. We collectively are THE expert on base metal coin collection and investment in the world.

Unless forumco (our host) dies, there is no real reason for realcent to die. We have a good core of members, and a solid admin/mod team. Members come and go but there are always new people discovering this hobby/business/obsession.

Actually...yes. But it is a BIG secret (like the size and location of my hoard).

I am happy to give a little information in case anyone is interested in the history of the first days of this forum.

I started out as a numismatic coin collector while in high school. (I am currently 32 years old) I built up a modest to respectable collection of coins focusing on a few areas, mostly Standing Liberty Quarters, Franklin Half Dollars, modern commemoratives, and wheat cents, although I collected some nice examples of just about every US series. I was active in a numismatic discussion forum and followed a link posted there to a forum called http://www.goldismoney.info. I am sure most of you have been there.

That site educated me, or at least got me to educate myself on matters of precious metals, especially gold and silver. I never lost my appreciation for numismatic coins, but found a new respect for bullion, one that did, and still does, surpass my interest in collector coins. Periodically someone on that forum would bring up the idea of sorting pre-1982 cents for their copper content. It was generally met by the community with an attitude that while technically, it is true that pre-82 cents are worth more than a penny it is hardly worth the effort to sort them, copper is not a worthwhile metal in such small amounts, and those who choose to sort pre-82 cents are sort of soft in the head.

Obviously, I strongly disagreed and knew at least a few others did as well including Ardent Listener, a person for whom I have more respect than you can know. So I quickly typed up my feelings on the matter and posted them on a freebie website that can be found here: http://www.realcent.friendpages.com/ Some of the facts are wrong and the prose was intentionally over the top, but I can't change it because I lost the password a long time ago.

The page got linked by a few other sites and I started receiving requests for information about copper and precious metals in general. I thought there was enough interest to start a discussion forum on the topic and created this one. I didn't think it would ever have more than ten or twenty members tops.

Not very long after the forum started taking off I began to have to deal with some personal problems. I had, and have, my own demons and have found various degrees in success in fighting them. I talked to two members of this forum and practically begged them to take ownership and responsibility for the budding community because I could not do it. I saw the value this forum could provide, and didn't want it to die. Luckily, someone stepped up.

I am personally still very much in to sorting copper cents. Going through a box coin by coin is one of the most calming and meditative things I can think of.

I can't believe how far this community has come, and couldn't be more proud.

Yours,

realcent.

Thank you for taking the time and spending the money to start this forum. I've learned a lot about numismatics here, not just copper cents.

realcent, thank you for your passion and persistence. Also, thanks to Ardent Listener who kept the ball rolling.

I've enjoyed my short time here learning from the different prospective as well as adding my two cents in, on occasion.

Take care and please visit often!

hey, Realcent, this is for you:

because of this site I started sorting pennies with my boy. He was 5 when we started. He could tell you a story about every wheat cent we found. He can add three digits in his head. He can tell you the capital of every state. He can tell you about the pennies from Spain, Panama, Bahamas, Barbodos and new zealand that we found. We have had so much fun and spent so much time together and he has learned so much because of your little site. this site has been priceless. God bless you.

Dear Lemon Thrower,

Your post means a lot to me, and made my day. I have two children myself, two girls, 5 and 3. Your son sounds amazing. Thank you so much for telling me this.

realcent, thank you for this site. I enjoy reading through the old (and new)topics, and have learned so much from them. Eventually, I will build up the nerve to participate in some topics. Penny and nickel sorting and buying silver is a new passion for me. Thanks, Mark

Yes I agree. Last year I was looking around reading about penny hoards. I came across this site and now I regularly pick up 20+ boxes of pennies a week and several boxes of halves.

If it wasn't for this forum and the information that I have learned I would still be spending and wasting paper instead of trading in in for copper and silver...which I sometimes trade for gold.

Thanks realcent and the faithful few who kept it going.

That would never work.. way too long!

I too would like to thank Doug for starting this site. I have learned a lot here and enjoyed the comraderie of my fellow members.
It's great to see you return Realcent.. we have tried to keep it going for you.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Let me see if I understand this? If you cross the North Korean border illegally, you get 12 years hard labor; the Iranian border illegally you are detained indefinitely. If you cross the US border illegally, you get a driver’s license, a social security card, welfare, food stamps, free health care!

Count me among the many people grateful that you started this site, Realcent. It's started a fire within me not just as a collector of metals but in trying to educate others about the state of our fiat economy and what they need to consider to survive economically in the days ahead, which aren't looking too good at the moment, "hope" and "change" notwithstanding. This site has been a huge asset to a lot of people and I'm glad to be a part of it.

Thanks from me too, Realcent. Like maoguinn, I'm still soaking things up like a sponge and a little reluctant to post right now. And thanks to the guys who picked up the slack and kept it going. If if it's someone else keeping the banner adverts off of here out of your own pocket, my hat is off to you as well. Like daviscfad, this is a place I'd pay for to keep it that way.
Thanks again everyone!
