$2000 (4 boxes) of Half Dollars this year...
23x 90% (2x Franklins and 1x Liberty)
30x 40%
Going through 1-2 boxes per week, dumping them is quite a pain. Using coin counters @ a banks with them in the lobby and loosing $5-15 per box. The bank workers swear it's impossible for the machines to mis-count. Whatever.
Will keep posting my results as they become available! |

Me too. Never dump halves at a TD "Penny arcade".
Luckily, I have a couple other I can trust.
ALL the TD counters miscount halves.
I roll $500 a week and coin count $1000. |

I have had very good luck with coin counters. The cummins machine at my dump bank counts very accurately as long as the coins are not mixed. Dumping mixed dimes and nickels leads to a few dimes showing up as cents. I have never been shorted on halves. |

Hey fb101 & killerken53 -
Can you suggest one of those other banks w/ coin machines in the branch? All the other banks I have accounts with say they don't have coin counting machines, and I don't want to dump at my source bank. Getting sick of getting majorly shorted at TD Bank.

Gold and silver, Welcome to the forum. That was 23 90% and 30 40%? Just wanted to be clear, cause those are some sick numbers. "US bank" in my area, every branch has accurate counters IMO.

| I use some small locals; Harleysville and National Penn. I suggest you start checking the small local banks, they're more likely to have a counter. (IMO) - Also, you could ask if any other branches have a counter. Sometimes they won't volunteer that the branch 2 miles away has one. |

| I also dump at a smaller local bank, Northwest. I might also suggest asking your local credit unions, they may offer the service. Be careful, there seem to be some "half size" machines out there that won't accept halves. |

Yes those numbers are correct... majority from the first 2 boxes, last 2 boxes contained 2 40% and 5 90% total, so yeah sick numbers indeed, sure made me happy!
Wish I had some US Banks in my area, they always had great services from what I remember from "back home".
Thanks for the other bank suggestions folks, guess I'll start hunting down the smaller banks. |

Are you checking the reject trays when you dump halves in those machines? If it looks like you've been shorted, reach up the reject tray. You may even want to ask the tellers to open the machine door. Sometimes the bags slump over the chute, and the larger coins get backed up against the bag.
And if the TD machines are anything like the Commerce machines, halves sometimes get stuck in the metal ramp thing you dump them in. Pull that metal thing out and shake it a little, more often than not coins will fall out. I usually do this after every dump before it counts the total just in case. There's a magnet at the bottom which is used to separate steel core Canadian coins, and unless they cleared it recently it could act as a blockage. If you're slick you may even be able to grab some when you reach up to check for blockages!
I only dump at the Commerce penny arcades, which I assumed to be the same as the TD penny arcades you're talking about. I notice these machines can be rather inconsistent, though I've never been shorted more than a dollar or 2. Are there other branches nearby you can use? Some machines may be better maintained than others. |

Interesting idea... I do sell things on eBay occasionally so that's something I can try. However I'll see if a local coin dealer will buy for perhaps $12.50 or even $11 a roll so I can turn it around faster.
Definitely something to think about as the new quarters come out this year.
Any suggestions for the 2007 halfs? I'm keeping two P/D pairs; do coin shops ever buy NIFCs for even a few cents above face? Else I'll just turn them back in. |
