I singled out four of my older wheat pennies:

1917 d ($1.30 - $2400.00)
1919 s ($0.25 - $3050.00)
1920 s ($0.75 - $3400.00)
1925 s ($0.75 - $6000.00)

The prices at the right are from coinflation:

Condition wise, the best out of the four is the 1919 s. Lincoln still has his ear and there are still prominent lines on the wheat in the reverse. I wish I could scan the coin and upload it here to get opinions as to the condition. Anyone know how to do that?

The prices on Coinflation go up to MS70. These four dates only have a lot of value if they are uncirculated.
For example:
1919s
G: .20
VG: .35
F: 1.00
VF: 1.50
EF: 4.50
AU: 14.00
MS60: 40.00
MS63: 125.00
Those are according to the 08 redbook.
Based on your description, you may have an EF-AU... but no one can properly grade without seeing the coin... As for scanning it, maybe someone here can help you. Ive never scanned one before.

I have a hard time resisting the temptation to take a wheat penny out of the take a penny cup when I see one!

Please note the values of coins can vary massively pending on where you look. Since there is no manufacturers suggested retail prices on coins, any organization can say what ever they want for the values of coins. There are numerous price guides available. If you go to the PCGS web site there is a price guide there. That one is inflated excessively. There are prices in the Red Book and the Blue Book by Whitman Publishing. The Red Book is excessive and the Blue Book is rediculously low. Many dealers try to go by the Grey Sheet for prices. Some dealers and collectors just make up whatever they want. No one is wrong and no one is right.
