Well I'm in NC and it looks like Hanna is going to bring us lots of wind 65+ mph and rain, lots of it!
Ike appears to be turning into a least a Category 3 and it looks like Florida might get hit by Sunday or it might head this way too.
Please, say a few extra prayers for the east coast....

6:50 a.m. EST : It appears to be mainly lots of rain especially more in central and western North Carolina, and some flash flooding. Hanna is a very fast moving tropical storm now which is a good thing. Looks like here is eastern NC we will be ok. Whew!!

| We're keeping an eye on Ike, (I'm in central FL) but it looks like it's gonna go south of us. Unfortunately, it's not looking good for the Keys, and current track looks bad for New Orleans. |
Are you throwing that out? |

| This morning the major interstate going north from houston is already getting backed up, gas stations are running empty(couldn't find any gas) Grocery stores sold out of canned goods/meats, water, flashlights. Hummmm I'm at work right now might take me 3 hours to travel 25 miles to my house this evening. When Rita rolled through it took me 4 hrs. to get home from work at the same distance. There were people holding up signs everywhere that had ran out of gas. I helped one elderly couple with a gas can full of 5 gallons, but that probably didn't even give them another miles worth of gas!!! Anyways this should be a bit interesting down here!!!!! |

Hurricane Ike
As of 8 a.m. CDT, Ike was located about 230 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, with maximum sustained winds near the center increased to 105 mph. The forward movement is toward the west-northwest at around 13 mph.
Although it has fluctuated up and down over the past 12 hours, Ike's pressure remains low with the latest reading from an Air Force Hunter Aircraft of 956 millibars. Landfall is less than 18 hours away but additional strengthening could still occur and it still may attain Category 3 status. That being said, the impacts from a high end Category 2 and a low end Category 3 are nearly identical.

| We are taking in refugees (family) from the Beaumont area. Word is the authorities are turning off water and sewer to force people to evacuate. Also, I am hearing reports that the storm surge will breach the wall in Galveston, meaning much of Galveston may flood. |

A little history.....Galveston’s prosperity suddenly came to a halt on September 8, 1900, when the deadliest natural disaster in United States history hit Galveston Island. A storm with winds exceeding 120 miles per hour and tidal surge devastated the island and killed more than 6,000 people. At the time of the 1900 Storm, Galveston had a population of 37,000 and was the fourth largest city in Texas following Houston, Dallas and San Antonio and the most sophisticated city in Texas. One-third of the city was completely destroyed, more than 3,600 buildings. The bodies were too numerous for conventional burials. At first, they were weighted and buried at sea; later they washed ashore. From that point on they were burned on funeral pyres all over the city. The dead were uncovered at a rate of 70 per day for at least a month after the storm. To prevent such a natural disaster from devastating the island again, the city built a seawall seven miles long and 17 feet high and began a tremendous project to raise the level of the island.
Galveston’s seawall now extends 54,790 feet, 10.4 miles, and covers one-third of Galveston’s Gulf side. Total cost of the construction of all parts of the seawall was $14,497,399. The original seawall was 15 feet thick at the base, five feet thick at the top, 17 feet high and weighed 40,000 pounds per foot.
Thousands of structures were jacked up during the grade raising while dredges poured 4 to 6 feet of sand beneath them. In other cases, (such as Ashton Villa) the fill was pumped into the raised basements.
Residents used elevated wooden sidewalks to walk through town. The grade-raising project began in 1902 and was completed in 1910 and included more than 500 city blocks. Source: http://www.galveston.com/history/

HOUSTON (AP) -- Authorities in the Houston area and along the Southeast Texas Gulf Coast ordered hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate Thursday as Ike bore down with hurricane-force winds that stretched across more than 200 miles and could gain even more strength.
Forecasters expected the storm's center to reach land this weekend somewhere between Corpus Christi and Houston, potentially punishing Houston and nearby areas even if they are not hit directly. Hurricane winds stretched up to 115 miles in all directions from Ike's center early Thursday.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for tens of thousands of people in low-lying areas in Harris County, where Houston is located.
Evacuation orders were also issued for all of Jefferson and Orange counties, between Houston and the Louisiana state line. More than 320,000 people live in the two counties.
Jefferson and Orange were two of three Southeast Texas counties that also had mandatory evacuations as Hurricane Gustav approached about two weeks ago. The region suffered major damage during Hurricane Rita in September 2005.
Four counties south and east of Houston had earlier announced mandatory or voluntary evacuations, and authorities began moving weak and chronically ill patients by bus to San Antonio, about 190 miles from Houston. About 1 million people live in the coastal counties between Corpus Christi and Galveston. In Houston, gleaming skyscrapers, the nation's biggest refinery and NASA's Johnson Space Center lie in areas that could be vulnerable to wind and floodwaters if Ike crashes ashore as a major hurricane.
Some forecasts say Ike could strengthen to a fearsome Category 4 hurricane with winds of at least 131 mph over the Gulf of Mexico, and emergency officials warned it could drive a storm surge as high as 18 feet.
Ike was a Category 2 storm as of 8 a.m. Thursday with top sustained winds of near 100 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. It was over the Gulf's energizing warm waters about 575 miles east of Brownsville, Texas, and was moving west-northwest near 10 mph after ravaging homes in Cuba and killing dozens of people in the Caribbean.
If current projections of the storm's path hold up, the area surrounding Houston -- home to about 4 million people -- would be lashed by the eastern or "dirty" side of the storm, said meteorologist Jeff Masters, co-founder of San Francisco-based Weather Underground. This stronger side of the storm often packs heavy rains, walloping storm surge and tornadoes.
"I expect a lot of damage in Houston from this storm," said Masters, adding that Ike could cause a "huge storm surge" affecting at least 100 miles of the Texas coast.
Patrick Trahan, spokesman for the city of Houston, told The Associated Press early Thursday that "based on the current forecast (we) would expect to see some flooding based solely on the surge in some low-lying areas."
The oil and gas industry also watched the storm closely, fearing damage to the very heart of its operations.
Texas is home to 26 refineries that account for one-fourth of U.S. refining capacity, and most are clustered along the Gulf Coast in such places as Houston, Port Arthur and Corpus Christi. Exxon Mobil Corp.'s plant in Baytown, outside Houston, is the nation's largest refinery. Dow Chemical has a huge operation just north of Corpus Christi.
Refineries are built to withstand high winds, but flooding can disrupt operations and -- as happened in Louisiana after Hurricane Gustav -- power outages can shut down equipment for days or weeks. An extended shutdown could lead to higher gasoline prices. Source: http://climate.weather.com/articles/iketexas091102.html?page=1 |

Ike may not be a category 4 or 5 and may not even make it to a 3, but the thing is huge. Even at 100mph the winds are nothing to sneeze out, but the big question is how much water can a storm that size push ashore? The darn thing looks as big as Texas.
If you are short of water, maybe you can rig up a rain catcher to build yourself up an emergency supply. You will have more than you want in short order.
