After finding this site awhile back , I got interested in searching pennies mostly for errors. Figured why I'm at it , I my as well hoard some copper. I'm no way near what you guys master doing. Takes me awhile to get 10 lb's. Now when I bag up 10 lb's , there is the 5% zinc to deal with and a few 82's hear and there. So my question is , how much should the bag weigh , so I HAVE 10 lb's of copper or a little over. I tried to figure it out and went crazy. I figured you guys would have some kind of chart or something. Thank you for your help , Ken

I may be a little off but I think 134 to make a pound so if so 1340. If you are going to look through pennies for errors might aswell pull out the cu. You can always sell or trade them here for somethign you want.

| Oh yeah and I think a 50 dollar bag of wheats weigh right around 34 lbs. Again I may be abit off. I know someone on here can tell you the exacts lol |

Don't use mint fresh numbers, you want to be dealing with circulated weights.
10,015 pennies is about 70 lbs including the box and tape (the US flat rate box shipping record). So 10,000/70= 143 pennies per pound X 10 = 1430. Excluding the packaging, a popular figure is 145 pennies in a pound.
I think you want to know about 10 pounds of copper (plus 5% zinc) so given the 1450 estimate above you need about 1450*1.05= 1523 coins for 10 lbs of copper. Rounding up a touch to full rolls, 1550 typical copper coins seems like a safe bet. If you mixed in 1982s without checking the copper content, then throw in another 50 pennies to hit an even 1600.
That said, pennies are #2 Copper and could be sold by the pound without grossing up for the 5% zinc.
Perhaps someone with more practical experiance will chime in - we have some very helpful members here. |

The record is actually 10,105 copper pennies. I usually just figure it at 150 copper pennies per pound. That pound would contain 5% zinc though, so you would have to do the math to get 10 pounds of pure copper. I will do some exact weights of circ pennies with the counters and scales later this week.  |

| Thanks for the help guys. Legacypac an Hoard know what I'm trying to do. I was doing the math and it was driving me crazy. Then I tried to figure just one pound. Then I could just X what ever I have. I think Legacypac is good with a 1600 amount. There are just a few 82's. So I guess , I will weigh 160 and just times buy 10. Thank you guys , Ken |

I worked it out without the 82's. "a few 82's here and there" is hard to quantify. You want X amount of pounds of pennies to yield 10 pounds of copper. Since prior to 82, the pennies were 95% copper,(thats right isn't it?) the equation would be....... 0.95X = 10. Divide 10 by 0.95 and get 10.526315.. or roughly, 10.53 lbs. That would be about 1541 pennies. (pre 82).
So your bag would need to weigh just over ten and one half pounds ......(10.53 lbs)
