Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried melting their own gold at home.

They say it's a snap as long as you have an acetylene torch and a strong crucible, and then you pour it into water or an ingot and run to the bank.

I have maybe a few grams; they're so small I'd be embarrassed to try to sell them individually, but I think if they were one solid piece it might be a nice little chunk.

Is it worth a shot? Any tips?

It is nothing I would ever try sober.

I've only got about 1.6 grams of 14K gold. I'm much more interested in silver, primarily sterling pieces that are clearly marked as such or 90-percent coins that nobody should want to melt down, since their silver content is known. Plus, my landlord might not want acetylene torches lit up inside.

I have melted some silver and copper, gold isn't hard. The problem you run into in trying to sell what you have melted is that unless the person you sell it to can do assays then they have no way of knowing what the purity of the button is.

About 8 years ago I tried melting down some gold charms I had just to see what the effect would be. I had a small hand held torch (Radio Shack used to sell them) and melted down the gold. It didn't flow like I had expected it to, it kind of clumped together into a blob like nugget. I ended up selling it to one of the "we buy gold" outfits for a decent price.

Wear asbestos gloves, shirt, pants and underwear! Hot metal and skin don't play well togethere.

When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion...when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing...when you see your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you...when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice...you may know that your society is doomed."
