Food crisis? Try rats, says Indian state government

PATNA, India (Reuters) - A state government in eastern Indian is encouraging people to eat rats in an effort to battle soaring food prices and save grain stocks.

Authorities in Bihar, one of India's poorest states, are asking rich and poor alike to switch to eating rats in a bid to reduce the dependence on rice. They even plan to offer rats on restaurant menus.

"Eating of rats will serve twin purposes -- it will save grains from being eaten away by rats and will simultaneously increase our grain stock," Vijay Prakash, an official from the state's welfare department, told Reuters.

Officials say almost 50 percent of India's food grains stocks are eaten away by rodents in fields or warehouses.

Jitan Ram Manjhi, Bihar's caste and tribe welfare minister, said rat meat was a healthy alternative to expensive rice or grains, and should be eaten by one and all.

"We are very serious to implement this project since the food crisis is turning serious day by day," Manjhi, who has eaten rats, told Reuters.

In Bihar, rat meat is already eaten by Mushars, a group of lower caste Hindus, as well as poorer sections of society.

I have eaten squirrel and rabbit, and I doubt rat is far off from squirrel or rabbit meat. But, rat just sounds so unsavory. There will indeed be a food crisis here in the States before I resort to rat meat for sustenance.

Actually a field rat that lives in a clean environment eating grains, nuts and such would be safe to eat. Might even be tasty. Not much different than rabbits or squirrels.

On the other hand, I would rather eat old leather shoes than a sewer rat or inner city ghetto rat.

Neckro, what did the dog and cat taste like? Being carnivores, I can't see them tasting all that good...

Dog and Cat tasted like meat, not chewy nothing of the sort. They were breed to be eaten. Tastes great in a stew. =D I wouldn't rec' eating a street dog or anything like that. They can be rather nasty.

I've often wondered about raising mice as food for my two cats. Farming rats for human consumption wouldn't be far from this. But wouldn't rabbits be a better meat source relative to the space and food required to raise them? Better yet, why not vermiculture (worms)?

Or hell, don't they have pigeons there? I can't see rats having all that much meat on them relative to the effort required to get them. And pigeons probably taste better. Very lean dark meat.

I'm not gone, I'm just lurking.

There is always 'possum too. Looks like it has been tried before. This was in New York in 1916.

Or you could skip the rats and try eating dirt directly. http://realcent.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~4388.asp

They eat them in New Orleans and are called "River Chickens"..........that's because they come from near the river.

Ponce,
I grew up a half block from the River and still live in New Orlens.
Where I grew up, there was a railroad track along the River levee and the railcars leaked grain on the tracks.
I saw some big "grain-fed" rats. But I never heard of anybody eating them.
Where did you hear of such a story.

Of course anything cooked right can taste good. A little Tabasco sauce and garlic works wonders.

I've eaten nutria and squirrel in a nice red sauce.
That was pretty good. And those are just fancy rats.

So next hurricane maybe I'll eat me some rats when the mre's run out.

But they have to be grain fed !
