I got $20 of CWR that were 95% copper at the Credit Union yesterday. Your spouse didn't get mad at you and turn in a box of coppers did they? :) You gotta like it when you get 40 rolls pre sorted like that. The one thing that was kind of interesting is that there was probably on average only 1 or 2 zincs per roll, however rather than being 1983 or 1984 they would be 1995, 2006. How does someone get rolls with only one zinc and it is in the middle of the roll and from 2006?

What it means is that it is probably an old change jar finally getting rolled and cashed in. It would have lots of older coins and maybe a few newer ones. We will probably be seeing a lot more of this. A fellow hoarder out here just got $80 of solid copper rolls. Now is the time to get as many CWR as you can from your banks.  |

Are your coppers taking up a lot of space? Unless you live in a really small place, space shouldn't be an issue (unless you're HCBTT). $1000 in coppers easily fits inside two average-size office supply boxes, and most people, I would think, would have at least this much space available somewhere.
Here's the style of Tyvek envelope I've been using for $50 copper lots:

Fill several of these with $50 lots and extrapolate the volume those take up with how much copper you have, and you'll see that space really shouldn't be an issue. Especially since you could move $50 bags around to fill nooks and crannies where you have space instead of just trying to find room for 5-gallon pails, this might be a better option both to help you maximize your copper-storage space and to show your wife that the copper can be put in places where you probably weren't using all available space anyway.
Maybe Horgad could weigh in on how much space the $650 in coppers that I sold him took up (or didn't take up) in the Tyvek bags. |

Nope, not taking up too much space at all. I can get a ton in 1 bag. You would be surprised at how small the footprint of a ton really is. |

| Space is not an issue. I have an entire unfinished basement. 1,000 sq ft - 9 ft high ceilings. I don't have much of a hoard right now only 4 buckets full. Time spent hoarding vs. time spent with the wife is the main issue. |

Maybe your wife could help you hoard? Seems like that'd be a great opportunity for a family activity. Plus it would help reinforce with the rest of the family the wisdom of hoarding instead of the "American way" of borrowing and mortgaging our future away.
A lot of my Brinks stockpile (just a few hundred dollars in bricks at the moment) has been piling up at my girlfriend's apartment and she and I have had a lot of conversation time while breaking open the bricks and dumping coins into the Ryedale. Maybe you and your wife could do the same? |

I think this is more than just her seeing your pennies as a useless hobby, because the majority of Americans would think that people like us are nuts. These are the people who are trusting in their FRNs and 401(k)s and so on even now, seven years after Enron, Worldcom, etc. Does your wife not grasp that you're trying to hedge your bet against the future of fiat currency, or is she just so shortsighted when it comes to investing (which I think is a term that applies to us hoarders) that she can't see the forest for the trees? |

| My wife wants 2 things. Me to spend time quality with her, and me to fix our basement up. She also doesn't want me to work a 2nd job. By hoarding the pennies, I stay at home and make a little money when I sell. I have promised to use any profits to fix up our basement, only thing is, it's going to take a lot of pennies to make the estimated $30,000 to fix it up. I think maybe if I frame the copies of the checks I've received for selling pennies, maybe it will make her appreciate what I am doing. I sold all my hoard to Horgad and said now are you happy and she said why is he buying them? I said he believes the value will go up, as I do also, and she said then why did you sell them? I really can't win. I know what I'm doing is making things better for us. I just need to pick and choose the times to do my sorting. |

At 2 cents per penny, that would be 1.5 million pennies.
What's the harm in sorting pennies? You're enjoying yourself and making some $$$ to boot. Plus, your wife's going to get a nice basement out of the deal? Sounds all right to me.

| $30K is a lot of money, but remember that the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. I'm doing that with $48K in student loans--and reselling copper pennies is helping me take a few more bites out of that elephant. |

I think a lot of us can see reflections of our own hoarding dilemna in Tourney's story. I know I do.
LOL@Ant.. we can't call him that.. he wouldn't be qualified to be a member of the Rational Thinkers Club then.. oops, he was already disqualified for finding an Indian. Stealth was not involved.. he bought them openly. I have been buying quite a few bags stealthily myself this week. |
