Ok, vacation time is coming up Friday, and I'm heading up to the Outer Banks of NC for a bit of Beach hanging. Anyone from here around that neck of the woods? I was wondering if there are any coin shops in the general area. I know of one or two around VA Beach, but not down on the Banks. Perhaps I could rent a metal detector and look for Pirate Treasure!

Are you throwing that out?

Ocracoke beach is wonderful, take the ferry(30 minutes) and spend the whole day on the white beaches. Where are you staying?

Outer Banks--sounds like a long drive for penny boxes. Maybe you should try the Inner Banks instead.

Can't advise you on the Outer Banks as the closest I was able to get back in 2003 was Virginia Beach--of course, I went to Virginia Beach BECAUSE Hurricane Isabel was coming, and the authorities had the roads south of there barricaded off. So maybe you'll find the coins that I missed!

I think it's Corolla where we're staying. I'm thinking metal detector now. Never can tell what might wash up.

Are you throwing that out?

Our family used to have a house in Poplar Branch, on the Currituck Sound side of Corolla. We used to go across to the Whalehead Club back when it was abandoned and dilapidated and walk over to the ocean. All of us cousins grew up and the house got sold.

I haven't been back for over 10 years, so I'm not much help on the coin shop question, sorry. It has really gotten more populated. Duck is the next closest town, but I don't know how much is there. Maybe Kitty Hawk has something?

The wife and I have been there many times. It's the ship graveyard of the Atlantic. Check out local books on the subject as to where many of them are. Many are near shore or the shoreline has shifted and buried them. I wish I could go too.

Hello Flbandit, their are no coin shops in the outer banks but as you said Virginia has a couple. Corolla is a very nice area but the light to get in to the Duck/Corolla area gets backed up durring peek change over times and can get backed up over Wright memorial bridge, about 5 miles. Just a heads up so you wont get caught in that mess.

Man it is nice here! The place is huge and I can see the beach from the window! It's hot, but not like the Florida heat at home. It was actually pleasant last night sitting out around the pool. Tonight I'm gonn be hitting the hot tub! Monday I'll have to hit the local bank and see if anyone cashed in copper pennies while here on vacation!

Are you throwing that out?
