I have seen bags like this offered for some time and have always wondered if there would be any decent coins or is this mainly hype? The skeptic in me would have to assume that if it was such a great deal that the guy would be keeping everything and scrapping it himself versus selling anything. What say you?

I shy from foriegn coins.
When I say foriegn I mean beyond the U.S. and Canadian and even some Mexican coins. Things people I interact with would recognize.

I get enough international coins from my sorting here. Just picked up a 2007 25 ore Danish coin from right on the end of a penny roll.
Those bags might be a good way to build your circulated international coin collection - but I would not think them a practicl way to collect silver, copper or nickel. You need a bunch of an easily verifiable composition coin to make a pound of copper or nickel - less then a few pounds is just not worth the cost of handling to hourd. |

| Coinflation had an article a while back about how NYC sells all of it's foreign coins at auction the end of every year. Apparently, they get a lot of them in the parking meters. |

I bought a one-pound bag about a year ago and didn't recognize any of the coins as being silver or (ha!) gold. I think it's just hype and that only people who buy lots such as these don't know much about foreign coins (like myself) or about the odds of finding anything valuable--and I'd say it's a safe bet that the seller realizes that this is a crapshoot for the buyer that the buyer will probably lose. I say save your time and money for other purchases, like copper pennies. |

i bought a small bundesbank lot one time too and wasnt that impressed with the selection. mostly european coins of course and nothing that old. maybe 1 small silver per 7 pounds if i remember right. hard to hoard as well because of the difficulty in figuring exact composition. i only hoarded the nickel ones. there was a thread on here showing the main types a while back.
i collected foreign pretty heavy for a while - have just under 3000 different. i did it not so much for value as for the learning experience. you can learn a lot from a country if you actually know whats pictured, the dating systems, rulers, denominations and so on. |

| I purchased a bag of foreign coins on EBay a few years ago. It was 20 lbs of coins, and I got a lot of silver and a lot of older coins. About 20% from Mexico and Canada. I paid $10 bucks for it and got at least $30 in silver. Several older pre 1900 coins in the mix, that I have no idea on the value. I bought it because I thought I would give several of the coins out as interesting Christmas gifts along with Silver Eagles. I had no idea it had the silver or older coins before I bought it. |
