Was finishing sorting the last of my halves. As I poured the roll out on the table this falls out half covered by the rest of the halves.

It is some novelty plated '80 half. I use the word plated loosely, I would say Au washed at best, if it is even Au.

Not expecting to see a Au coin, for a few nanoseconds there I didn't know how to react until my eyes re-focused and I realized what it really was. Talk about a rush.

I'm not sure if this an indicater of how I'm wired, but my first brief thought was not "wow I found a gold liberty eagle!", but instead, "who is the frickin' moron who would put a gold coin in with halves and then take it to the bank."

"But nobody really appreciates laissez-faire capitalism, least of all the capitalists. They all want to control the future, not let it happen. And everybody wants to gain some edge...some little favor or advantage – a monopoly, a subsidy, a fat contract with the government, a handout, free food, free medicine, crop supports, student loans, a guaranteed pension, a bailout, a tax credit...some kind of greasy giveaway; the last thing they want is a free market, where the chips fall where they may." - Bill Bonner

"No, man. You gotta keep goin'. What am I gonna do? Quit? That's not an option. Life's a garden. Dig it? You make it work for you. You never give up, man. That's my philosophy." --Joe Dirt

I've gotten a few. These are crap collectors items marketed by HSN and others (www.morganmint.com). People buy them thinking they have numismatic resale value, and I guess they dump then when they find out the truth. I also have a penny like that. Plating is usually 24K about 1 atom thick...

Yes, it is sad how much money can be made off of stup....er, uninformed people out there. I guess there will always be the shysters willing to rip people off, but someday they will get their due.

Good but nasty trick - so many people have never seen, touched or spent a 1/2 you could tell people they are made of gold and a lot of people would believe you. Oh! A pretty gold coin with Kennedy and an Eagle on it... this has to be worth something!
